Background and Header Help

First off, the URL of the blog is:

Im starting to customize my blog, but Im having a few problems. Im learning HTML and CSS as I go, any help is a
1. I deleted the existing header picture, and replaced it with a custom picture. When I created the picture, I made sure that it was the same dimensions as the original. However, when I put the image in the html, it became smaller and did not fit in the box. The size of the original picture was 639 x 238. I know that this has been answered, but I cant figure it out, any help is greatly apprieciated!
2. Other than changing the header, I would like to make the entire background black. I found the body background and made it black, but I cannot seem to locate the header background in either the Stylesheet or the Header section.
