Background Image Help

    Hello there,

I’m having trouble with the size of my background image. It seems to be fine on my computer and everything looks great, but when I view it from different computers it’s wayyyy too big. Any Ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First off, you really need to optimize your images, and also cut way down on the number of posts showing on your main page (settings > reading). As image intensive as your site is, it takes WAY too long to load. I would suggest cutting back to 5 posts on the main page. See this FAQ on image optimization. I would suggest your images file sizes not be anymore than 50k, and 35k would be even better. Personally I would not wait for your site to load. I would just go elsewhere unless there was really something there I felt very compelled to read or see.

You are going to have to work in the CSS to get the sidebar and content area shifted over and aligned correctly between the images.

And lastly just as a warning, the images you have on your blog, are they your own images, or are they copyrighted images that you have taken from other sites? If they are copyrighted, do you have permission from the copyright holder to use them? If someone sees them, and raises a fuss with wordpress about you using their copyrighted images, your blog will most likely go bye-bye very quickly (be deleted by wordpress) and there is a very good chance it will not be given back. WordPress takes copyright laws and complaints very seriously and I’ve seen many blog deleted for using copyrighted images.

If the images are meant to be used on blogs and such, then that is of course fine, but I would make sure if I were you.

By the way, the background image is showing at its true size which is 1440px x 758px. You might have to downsize it some or as I said, work on shifting everything else over so it is centered between the two images.

I understand, and yes we have permission. Thank you though for the warning :)

But anyways, you say I need to work on the CSS to get everything aligned correctly, but this is where I get confused because it’s on other computers that it doesn’t show up correctly. On mine it looks the way it’s supposed to. I know because I edited it on my computer it’s going to look right, but how do I make it look right on every computer?

I have Firefox and Safari, SeaMonkey and Opera, and it is misaligned on all of them. The image can only go so far to the left without making it go “negative” which will mess things up even more because not all browsers handle negative values for image placement and will really go crazy. What you need to do is to move the rest of the blog stuff to the right to center it between the two side images.

And on the image copyright issue, I was just wanting to mention it just in case.

What browser are you using, and what version?

I have 3.0.10 and the blog main components are offset to the left covering part of the left hand section of the background image.

OK, wait a minute, you are using a flexible width theme. If you widen and then narrow your browser window you will see what I mean. The main part of the blog will narrow and widen with the browser window width.

Background images such as the one you are using will always be an issue with flexible width themes because the background image is static and the blog is flexible.

Your choices are to NOT use a background image, live with it, or switch to a fixed width theme.

Ok, thank you very much for your help.

1024 x 768 monitor resolution is still the most prevalent in use on the web right now, and here is what your blog looks like at 1024 x 768 monitor resolution with the browser window maximized.
