  hi i am using the mystique theme and i would like to put an image on the background but i don’t know what size the image has to be.

  If you use an image that looks good tiled, then your goal would be to get the smallest image possible and repeat it.

  If you’d like to use a large image as a background, then you should pick a size that will look good on as many monitor resolutions as possible, which can vary. Something to watch out for is that large backgrounds usually are large file sizes which can lead to a huge impact on bandwidth and make your site slow to load. You’ll want to optimize the image as much as possible while still keeping it at the size you want.
