background not visible in mobile view, with Harmonic theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there!

I love the Harmonic theme, so thanks for that! Everything seems to go well up until now with customizing, except for one thing:
When visiting the blog on a mobile device, the theme background is overlayed by, what seems, a white background of the front static page that I’ve set. On the desktop version, this isn’t the case.

Anyone any idea how come, and how to solve this? Thanks a lot in advance for your involvement!

On a side note, is there a way to edit my post up here? It wasn’t my intention to have my blog posted in my question.

  • Could you please let me know:

    – what mobile device (i.e. iPhone 5s)
    – what OS (i.e. iOS 8.1)
    – what browser (i.e. Safari)

There isn’t a way to edit your post after it’s posted. The site you’re asking about is generally needed so folks can help with issues in the public forums. :-)

    Hi Kathryn!

Thanks for replying. Mobile device I’m accessing the site from, is Android, with the Chrome browser.

  • Thanks, Dennis! As there are a zillion different types of Android phones and OS’s and they all behave a bit differently, could you please give me your phone type (i.e. Nexus 7) and Android version (i.e. 4.4.4 KitKat) That will allow us to try to see and replicate the specific issue you’re having. Thanks!

    Sure, it’s a Note 2, with Android 4.4.4.

  • Thanks for the clarification.

Three of my colleagues running Android 4.4.4 just checked your phone, one on a Note 2, and none was able to see a white overlay on your site.

In order to test, we had to turn off the separate mobile theme that it looks like you enabled under Appearance > Mobile. (I’ve reactivated it.) The mobile theme is only intended for sites that are not responsive, so I was wondering if you enable the mobile theme because of the glitch you were seeing, or was the glitch you were seeing with the mobile theme active?

We’d love to see a screenshot of what you’re seeing on your phone so we can try to figure out what’s going on.

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library so I can see it. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply, once again. I enabled the mobile view, because without it, the sidebar wasn’t displayed. When enabled, it displays it at the bottom, which is ok.

Even though I didn’t have the white overlay when the mobile theme was disabled, the background wasn’t scaled to fit the smaller screen. I remember reading somewhere, that is what would happen.

The screenshots are uploaded. I uploaded two. One is of the top part, the other scrolled down a bit. Both show a white overlay (the length is not the issue, that was a personal choice for now), and behind it on the sides, blue is visible of the background picture.

    HI guys,

i hope you don’t mind Dennis if i also join this conversation as i also have a problem with my blog when i look at it from the android – Samsung Note 3

The Logo of the blog does not show up just a white box, but on an iphone the logo does show up.
Kathryn are you able to help fix this?

  • amodelsfavorites – I’d be glad to help, but I’m going to ask you to please start a new thread so I can help you more easily. Troubleshooting these kinds of issues where we go back-and-forth is very difficult with more than one person jumping in with different issues. Thanks!

Start the new thread here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/themes#postform

  • Dennis – thank you for the screenshots. The images you provided are taken with the optional mobile theme active. That mobile theme – called Minileven – looks the same on any site, for everyone who’s chosen to activate it. For example, with the mobile theme active, your site would look the same on phones no matter whether you’re running Harmonic, or Twenty Fourteen, or Sorbet, or any other theme.

On most newer phones, Minileven does display black text on a white column, against a light blue background, with a dark blue menu at the top – that’s the design of Minileven.

If you prefer to change the colours of the mobile theme, you can do that with some custom CSS:

If you have Custom Design and use Custom CSS, you can opt to apply custom CSS to the WordPress.com mobile theme. To enable this option, go to Appearance Customize CSS and check the “Include this CSS in the Mobile Theme” option. Then use “.mobile-theme” at the beginning of your CSS selectors to target just the mobile theme.

Let me know if this explains things, or if you need further help. Thanks!

    Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for your reply again, and for your explaination of why the themes have a uniform layout when the mobile theme is activated.
As I mentioned in my fifth post here, I only enabled the mobile view, because without it, the sidebar isn’t displayed. With mobile view enabled, it displays it at the bottom, which is fine for me. But then I lose the background.

    So then my question is:
    – Do you have any idea how can I have the sidebar (at the bottom is fine), with the regular theme on mobile devices?

And my other question from my fifth post:
    – I remember reading somewhere that backgrounds scale to fit the screen of mobile devices, but this doesn’t happen either. Have I read wrong?

The designer has opted not to display the sidebar on small devices for aesthetic and usability reasons. It’s not possible to change this functionality.

I remember reading somewhere that backgrounds scale to fit the screen of mobile devices, but this doesn’t happen either. Have I read wrong?

Generally the background image will scale, but on very small devices like phones it’s normal not to see the entire background image squished into the same space as you would on a desktop screen. :-) Seeing just a portion of the background image is the expected display.

I hope this helps clarify things. Let me know if you have any other questions.
