Backing up a WP blog
-
Hi, I’m sure this must have been asked many times, but I can’t find good answer.
Is there any software which will allow one to back up an entire blog — posts, pages, images and comments — in one manoeuvre in a kind of simple idiot-proof way?
Is the “export” function at WP relevant here? I once tried it and the result was gobbledegook.
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I tried the Export function again, and the xml file I got on my desktop was just unformatted garbage, impossible to read. Are there 3rd party backup solutions that work? Thanks.

YOu mean make an HTML version of your blog saved to your computer? I’m sure there are, but they probably cost money. XML is not garbage, it’s code. You need to put an XML file into proper software in order to extract it. If you want, download WordPress.ORG software and import the XML file into that.

Thanks. But even the xml file i got was preceded with this on each attempt:
This page contains the following errors:
error on line 175294 at column 29: Input is not proper UTF-8, indicate encoding !
Bytes: 0x08 0x08 0x29 0x3CIs the wp.org software free and can I use it purely to back up, not for migration?

Yes, sure you can.
That error looks typical. It will not really cause a problem for you. Try it and see.

I’ll try and come back to this. Thanks. I have a feeling that xml file is seriously incomplete, though. The whole process got aborted when it came to the error. I’ll see if the other approach works.

If it’s too big, it will have to be broken up into chunks. I’m afraid I don’t know how to do that. I’m currently struggling with an export file myself.

Yes, but they’re not free, generally speaking. If you like I can tag this for staff attention and get them to make you an export file, but it’ll be Monday at least before they do it.

There are some programs / services that will turn a WordPress site into a PDF file for a book. WordPress.COM had a news thing about that some time back and I think @Timethief also had a Post about turning your blog into a book, sorry can’t remember the links for here or @TT’s site.
Would that do something like what you want to do?

Thanks. Not so much into the pdf concept — more keen on raincoaster’s idea: ” I can tag this for staff attention and get them to make you an export file, but it’ll be Monday at least before they do it.” What I want is all my content — pages, posts, comments and pics — and am happy to pay someone. It’s a LOT, though.
Or any automated backup. It’s surprising how complicated this all gets once you look into it!

Kardotim …. thanks. But my whole thread is about this not working and asking for help, even if I pay … See above.

… If this is flagged for staff, it would very kind if you read the thread. I am a paying member.

I’m sorry but that’s the only way to export your content. Once you’ve imported that into a local or self-hosted installation, you can use this plugin to make a full backup: https://wordpress.org/plugins/backupwordpress/ – this also supports backing up to cloud services like Dropbox.
On WordPress.com we automatically make backups of your blog in case of an emergency.
