Can I back up the media library and keep the back-up externally?

Here at wordpress.COM we don’t have to worry. Read: Backups https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/#backups
You can also create your own backups. Export https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Your EXPORT explains how to save media files. I have a back-up of all media files before I insert them into the library.
However when I delete a file and insert an update instead with the same name, the library changes the name a bit for internal use (adding a number). I wanted to back up the media library as is with the new file names in case of general failure..
It seems that (a) I can’t, (b) I do not need to as you keep a back-up of it for such an emergency.
O.K. -
You cannot prevent the overwriting of files and the consequential file numbering that you refer to.
Best wishes.
