Backlinks and WordPress

I just read a blog that said WordPress deleted someone’s account because they had backlinks. What exactly are backlinks?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What is the link to where you read that? We need the context to give you a more exact answer to their use and your concern. A back link is a link to another blog or site –

That’s of course the first place I looked. But I wanted it in WP’s own words because I have two WP blogs, and I put Go read my __ blog on each of them. But of course, I will erase that now

If your site includes links to other sites, these are outgoing links. If other sites link to yours, these are incoming links or backlinks. The number and the quality of such sites influence your page ranking.
You understand that you don’t control who and how many will link to your site, so backlinks by themselves cannot possibly be a factor for suspension (except if you create these backlinks yourself by spamming other sites, forums etc). So chances are you read something wrong or you misunderstood it. Could you give us the URL of the post you read?

Your “Go read my __ blog” links are perfectly legitimate, provided none of the two blogs violate the wordpress.com TOS.

thank you for the clarification! But I don’t want to involve this other user. I hope you understand.

Then you will allow me to favor “you read something wrong” over “you misunderstood it”!
What the other user must have meant is affiliate links and other links designed to drive traffic to other sites (especially commercial or fraudulent sites).
If you had a blog that was just a pretext for posting such links, then yes, the blog would be suspended – see the first yellow box here:
    http://en.wordpress.com/tos/
But if you have two different blogs with genuine, original and non-commercial content, then of course you can link from the one to the other.
