Backup.

Hi!
I’m trying to transfer my wordpress.com blog to a hosting service (via wordpress.org I gather). I bought the domain name (guiheadz.com) through WordPress.
Part of the installation process on my hosting service is installing wordpress – but it wants to install it to guiheadz.com – which I am terrified will delete all my existing blog data – so they recommend I take a backup and then install all the data from this backup to their server.
how do I do this?
THanks for any help. I am loosing my mind with this. :/
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You go to the Dashboard Tools page and create an Export file. Then, in the new webspace in which you’ve installed WordPress.org software, you go to the Dashboard Tools page and you click Import. Once the import is done, you check it to make sure everything including the images came over. Then and only then you change where the domain name points, following the instructions in the Support documents.

Ok. Sure. But just to check here…
I am about to click ‘Install’ wordpress to guiheadz.com having only exported a small XML file.

No.
That URL is currently associated with your WordPress.COM blog. Your other web space must have an IP address, a series of numbers; it does not have that URL. And a dashboard that is not the same as the one here. Maybe even a Cpanel.
Also: before doing anything, CONFIRM THAT EVERY THING ON YOUR EXISTING BLOG SHOWS UP ON THE NEW SITE. Don’t just create an export file and assume it worked. Import it into the new space first.

Ok. I’m making progress, but this is tricky.
(And thanks raincoaster – for your help – it’s much appreciated!)
So I installed wordpress on my new host, and imediately I have a page showing up – that has elements of my blog (inlcuding header image etc…) but an error saying it can’t find content.
Interestingly enough there are links to my other blog posts on the page and when I click them I go to the correct blog post – but I’m pretty sure these are now the pages on my old wordpress.com site.
So I am in some kind of wierd conflicting domain business. I guess I have to actually update my domain stuff now.
I was originally hoping to keep the new (hosted) site – not live and not change over the domains until I had played with it for a while – do some more design, but maybe this isn’t possible.
And then… how the hell do I do this? From my host? Or from the WordPress side?
Gulp.

At this point I have to refer you to WordPress.ORG. Your WP.com blog is fine. You just need to work on your .org one, and the answers to that are there.
