Backup and Restore (but also the Images)

I want to move my blog from wordpress.com to a self-hosted wordpress installation. I know that I can export all Posts, Comments etc. with the integrated tool (tools – export). But in this case the images are not contained. How can I do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You will have to download the images from here via their URL’s and drag and drop or “save” them via your browser to a folder on your computer desktop and then upload them to the new blog. Since the image URL’s in your new blog will be different from the URL’s in the posts/pages, you will have to go through and edit each post/page and put in the correct URL’s.

My suggestion is to leave the images here and then your new blog will “hot link” to them. Then if you wish, you can work on moving a few at a time over to the new blog and doing the necessary editing of posts and pages.

The blog here will have to remain open to the public (not set to private) until all the images are moved over, but that isn’t a real problem. Go to settings > privacy and choose the second option (block search engines) and then set all the posts on the blog here to private, or “unpublish” them via the bulk edit function at posts > edit.

thesacredpath is correct. Just an addition: When you import to a wordpress.org installation you can select to import with or without attachments. If you import with, the images/docs are moved as well and kept as post attachments; the link, however, still points to the old wordpress.com blog. All you need to to is to update the image URL to the new URL; it’s a tedious copy and paste exercise for every post, e.g. the old URL is ‘files.username.wordpress.com/YYYY/MM/filename/ and the new URL is ‘DOMAIN/wp-content/uploads/YYYY/MM/filename’. Sometimes it does not work when you hit ‘update’ in the image editor, and then you have delete the ‘old’ image and re-insert the ‘new’ image from the gallery that is already linked to the post. It takes time, but there is no real rush, since the images till work from your old wordpress.com blog. Been there, done that. Also remember that videos or slides may require a plugin in order to display.

When you import to a wordpress.org installation you can select to import with or without attachments.

Are you sure about this? I don’t have a self-hosted test blog set up right now so I can’t test this, but when I did my import there was no option to include attachments. I admit that was a couple years ago.

OK, I just set up another local install of the .ORG software and it does give you the ability to download the attachments when doing an import. Thanks for pointing that out husdal.

You’re welcome. At least one thing that makes going from .com to .org a litle less painful.

Yes, when I moved over it was about 25 hours worth of downloading/uploading images and then editing the links.

Sigh…and I still have a TypePad blog I plan to move to WordPress, no such import option with TypePad, unfortunately, and there are some 500+ pics on that blog…

That sounds like a long winter project.

That’s terrific! I’m just getting ready to export a photoblog, and that’s going to make it much MUCH simpler.

Typepad…good luck. Some people in the mists of time used their RSS feeds to import everything, but I’m afraid I don’t have any details on how that works.

Thanks for the tip, raincoaster I might look into thet, but I think I will go with thesacredpath’s suggestion and make it a looong winter project some 4-5 months ahead, something for the Xmas holidays maybe? I can already picture the wife mulling over the hubby spending precious quality time with his blog…
