Backup and updating WordPress

Note: I am not a tech-oriented individual and am unfamiliar with jargon and terms frequently used by tech sites. I signed up for WordPress via iPage in 2013 and setup my blog on WordPress shortly thereafter. Several years ago I was instructed to update my ‘PHP’ and did not do so because I I have no clue what ‘PHP’ is. I made few changes in my travel blog over the years but am now unable to access my site apparently due to the fact I have an outdated WordPress version which I am unable to update because of this ‘PHP’. A key requirement required a backup on my ‘host’. Who or what is my host?
I think you see my conundrum. My account is due to expire or renew in a month and I plan to cancel unless I can find a site that offers guidance or solutions in layman’s terms.
Help or guidance would be appreciated.

Who or what is my host?
Your host is the company on whose servers you have the WordPress software installed, so iPage in this case. So your best option here is to contact their support for help – they’ll be able to tell you how to download a backup of your site from their servers.
The forum you’re posting to now is for another hosting provider, WordPress.com. You can access your site via your account with us, because it’s connected here through the Jetpack plugin. But the site isn’t hosted on our servers, and we’re not the WordPress your site is built with.
The WordPress you’re using on your site is the open source software made by the community on WordPress.org. They provide support for that software in their forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/, so for most WordPress-related questions, that’s the best place to ask. But in this case you want your host, iPage :)
