backup file

I am moving my site from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. My hosting service is asking for a backup file in .tar.gz format. Is this kind of backup available to me?

    Howdy Nicholas,

We don’t offer a .tar.gz zipped export, but you can export your WordPress.com blog by following this guide:

    Export Your Website’s Content

This will generate an XML file with all your blog’s data, which you can send directly to your host, or zip using the appropriate compression software.

    I hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Caroline

Thanks Caroline. I sent that file to my host service but they said they wanted the full backup. I told them I don’t think it’s possible (which you just confirmed) and am waiting to hear from them.

    Hi Nicholas,

    Ahh, understood.

You can probably import the XML data yourself, once your host has set up your new WordPress installation. If it comes to that, you can find instructions on how to do so here (this is a WordPress.com support document, but the process is basically the same for WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs):
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

Best of luck with the transfer, and please let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help.

    Cheers,
    Caroline
