  What is the best way to make backups of my WP site on WordPress.com

  You can click on “My Site” “Settings” “export” and create an xml file of your content (not images) that can be kept in case you ever wished to move your site to a different host (or use with another provider to create a pdf file of your site). Also you can export all media in your library to your own computer if you wish.
