Backup My WordPress.com
-
Is there an easy way to back up my wordpress.com site? So that I can download and keep a record of everything on my local machine? Also would it be possible to export these backed up wordpress.com files to another wordpress site or my own hosted wordpress?
Thanks Guys

Go to Manage > Export: there you can export all your wordpress.com posts to a file that can then be imported to your local or hosted wordpress installation

Does this maintain the structure of the blog?
I did a foolish thing (I think) yesterday. I added a widget to my sidebar thinking that it would simply be added to what was there, but it replaced what I had.
Is there any way to undo it and revert to the sidebar structure I had before?
It seems like I’ve lost a lot of information that took a lot of work to create. -
Just drag all the widgets back to the sidebar in the order you prefer, the information did not get lost. If you are looking for the blogroll, it’s in the “Links” widget.

Two questions on this topic (sorry!)
Does exporting it take it away from where it is?? Or is it merely a copy.?
AND – what happens on screen when a visitor happens to be reading my blog when I am editing it and replacing it or indeed exporting it… Thanks in advance. -
Exporting is a copy: it does not delete anything. Readers do not notice anything while you are exporting (it might get slightly slower, but the whole exporting process takes seconds, so it’s sort of an academic question).

But I had “Pages” and other things I created myself in the sidebar. These do not appear in the widget list (as far as I can tell). How do i recover those?

I did Manage > Export. A download began and Final Cut Express automatically opened up.

It’s always a good idea to backup important files, no matter where hosted. However, it’s necessary to make sure that the place you use for backup is safe. Files here on WP are much safer, statistically, than on your home computer, which is probably not redundant and is subject to all sorts of mischief from power surges to theft.
Always make sure your backups are safe. I like removeable HDDs. Some folks feel better with CDs or DVDs stored off site. The point is, if you want to safeguard years of thought and work, don’t go halfway and just download to your PC.
