Maybe I should say how can I export my blog?

  • You can export your blog from Tools -> Export in your Dashboard.

    Hello,
I tried this, but all it does, is create an .xml file. Where are my pictures and other media?
If I was hosting the blog myself I would simply copy the file structure, but here?
All fields on the ‘export.php’ page were set to the “all” options.

For me the question still remains: How do you backup your blog…?

    Thanks in advance!

When you import the XML file into a wordpress blog there is an option your checkmark for attachments. Your image files, etc. are the attachments.

If you use windowslivewriter or Ecto then you will have a copy of each post and page you publish to your blog on your own computer.

Even on a self-hosted site, there is more to backing up than copying the folders and files since wordpress is database driven. Nothing works without the database and copying files and folders will not backup the database.

At wordpress.COM, you will have to grab the images one at a time (drag from the browser window to a folder on your desktop) to make yourself a backup of those.

Since wordpress is continually and constantly backing up all of our sites, there is virtually no chance of losing anything if that is your worry. If you just want a copy of everything for your own piece of mind as I said, you will have to do the images one at a time.

Ecto works beautifully – it captures everything, though it does not go backwards and you have to copy and past all your older posts – but this is an easy exercise – timethief put me onto it
