Backup Via email

I was looking around at wordpress.org blogs, and it seams like they have a tool where you can backup your blogs by having them emailed to you every week. However, I have a wordpress.com blog (http://www.leifandersen.net), and I would like the same thing. I’ve looked around and can’t find anything. Do any of you have suggestions?

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    (1) I recommend you use an offline editor like windowslivewriter or BlogDesk to post to your blog. Then you will always have backups on your own computer. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2007/10/26/offline-blog-editors-reviews/

    (2) You can export your blog contents and links out periodically and store them on your own computer.

    (3) You can subscribe to your own blog’s entries (posts) RSS feeds and the comments RSS feed as well.

    1. The problem with that is that I write on multiple computers, and if I did that, I would have a very scattered backup.

    2. Yup, I do that. I’m just trying to automate the process.

    3. My blog’s RSS feed is only 50 entries long, as it’s a bad idea to get a really long RSS feed.

    Thanks for the suggestions though.

You can always put the Subscribe by Email widget in and subscribe yourself.

I’m not aware of any way to “automate the process”.

It would be rare that wordpress.com’s server(s) will all crash at once.

So its pretty much taken care of.

On WordPress.com you have to manually export the backup file, which will get you “posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags”. This seems to assume that any images you uploaded are available on your computer.

BTW exporting links seems to get you only the *visible* links.

There are still very good reasons for backing up your blog, especially if you are an admin of a multi-author blog.

Moving from one wp.com blog to another has changed a bit:

Once the new blog is registered, follow these steps to complete the transfer:

    1) In the old blog, go to Tools -> Export and download the XML file to your computer.

    2) In the new blog, go to Tools -> Import and upload the XML file you downloaded in step 1.

Note: To make sure your photos and other attachments are imported, be sure to tick the ‘Download and import file attachments’ box in the 2nd step of the import process.

I did this just a few days ago, the images were transferred to my new blog: not so when I did that in the past!

Thanks 1tess, good thing to know for importing into a WP.com blog, but still doesn’t change the backup/export process, which I believe is what the OP was asking. :)

Yes, you are right, but I think lots of folk do not know about this change. Won’t help OP specifically, but in the past images were not transferred automatically.

@1less, the reason your images were transferred, is because there links did not change. So, maybe wp.com has added some special code to move images when they’re linked to from another account, but in general a wp xml file only will contain the links to those images (unless it has changed, I could be wrong. :) ).

@raincoster, well, I would get the posts, and I probably will do that (even though it will only give me posts from now on), but I would still like the xml file, if that’s at all possible.

@timetheif, rats okay. Looks like I’m out of luck.

I have been using the export function for years now. I simply upload them to my computer and then when I need space I copy them to disc.
