backups and "hosting"??

  • Unknown's avatar

what are the reasons in the .org versions for having to get / buy backups and pay for “hosting”? What does “hosting” mean? Why are backups different?
When I upgraded, did that automatically put me in the .org category?

I don’t recall ever defining a “host”, not knowing what it means.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

You are still using WordPress.com as opposed to WordPress.org. In WordPress.org, you have to provide your own webspace in which to install the WordPress software, upload your files, etc. Most people rent this from one of the many web hosts that are out there, though some host it themselves on a home server of some sort.

As far as backups go, they are in case of some sort of catastrophic failure. We keep backups for you in case our servers go down, your data won’t be lost. Those folks who host their own don’t have that benefit, so there are services available (and we provide a service as well) which will back up the data for them just in case something goes awry.

Let me know if you have any other questions or if I didn’t answer yours fully enough!

thanks, that answers a lot of questions, but my added name: fivecultureslater is under http://www.fivecultureslater.org. That is what made me question my status. the original one is still under therightthing.com.

I rather stay under the .com umbrella.

You are correct, both of your domains (therightthingblog.com and fivecultureslater.org) are registered through us and are pointed at your WordPress.com site therightthingblog.wordpress.com.

We’d love for you to stay with us, but if you ever change your mind your domains can be transferred to another registrar. You can also just point your domain towards other hosting through what are called “nameservers”. When you sign up for hosting with a company, they will give you these nameservers, you would just need to enter the nameservers in a certain place here with us (we would help you with that), and your domain would start pulling up that other hosting.

So long story not-so-short, you definitely have options! :)
