Bad Ad

  • Noting by the way, I can see the date stamp in the lower corner, but it looks like this could be a screenshot of an older screenshot, so I’d like to confirm. Thanks in advance.

    Hi supernovia,

Considering only the ad placement — this evening there was no ad obstructing the header of my site……. There was an ad obstruction last night, but it has apparently been fixed since then…….. I had uploaded a print screen of the obstructed header on my site from last night, as you can see from the date and time down in the lower right hand corner of the print screen.

Those header obstructions were on other WordPress blog sites this morning, as you can see from what I uploaded this morning……. I don’t know if any of them have been fixed yet……. If it’s a one-by-one fix, that could be pretty daunting.

So, I would really like to thank everyone at WordPress for their care and expertise in straightening this out.

This evening, there are ads in my side bar and at the bottom of my post, but they are placed appropriately and neatly.

Wishing you all a great day.

    supernovia,

…….”it looks like this could be a screenshot of an older screenshot”…….

I have stayed with the same theme for years because I really like it, so in that way it might look “older” to you….. But, the date and time are from last night……. On the other hand, you might have noted that I have been reposting old posts for awhile……. That is because I’ve been having some challenges in my old age……. I’ve slowed down considerably and know that most surfers do not go through a whole bunch of posts in one sitting……. And yet, what I wrote years ago is still pertinent and true today — so, it’s not really “old”.

I love the theme I chose when I first started writing……. It gives people a chance to explore if they are so inclined, and to find similar posts……. It has also allowed me to be creative in a satisfying way, so I’m glad for that.

This older theme fits an older me……. I hope others enjoy it as much as I do.

    Again, thank you for everything.

  • You’re welcome and let us know if there’s anything else we can help you with.

    Hi fstat,

I am thankful that the ads that obstructed my header were corrected……. But, I uploaded a number of print screens the other day showing how ads have also been obstructing areas of other blogs, i.e. obstructing their links, headers, and the cookies notification at the bottom of each post.

Fixing these problems clear across the board would help everyone’s posts to look better — make every blog more functional — keep readers from being afraid of malware — and make all of WordPress look more inviting and professional as a blogging platform……. So, I am looking forward to having these things fixed for everyone.

Thank you all at WordPress for all the techie things you do to make everybody’s day better.

    Hi Happiness Engineers,

This is an updated report of what I see on my site and on sites that I have surfed for the last few days.

Sometimes my header looks good with no obstructing ad — and at other times the header is covered……. The same goes for the blogs of other writers….. Other blogs have also had ads that partially cover the cookies notification.

*** This morning I came upon a couple sites with what seems to be an incomplete header ad……. It only has a picture of a woman, with no other words or information of any sort……. I uploaded an example of that ad and it is in my media folder for you to check out.

Thank you for your efforts……. It is good to make WordPress the best it can be.

  • @96isaiah are you able to close those banners?

  • Unknown's avatar

    supernovia,

I imagine I could……. I have closed banners on WP blog sites that advertise something trustworthy — like a car or well-known insurance company……. I closed those banners so I could use a link covered by the ad.

But, the weird, blank ad with only a picture of a sour woman makes me think of malware, so I don’t even want to think about interacting with it.

I think many people feel the same as I do……. Ads are okay if they do not deface a person’s web site or the use of it……. Some themes seem to be designed to accommodate an ad without defacing it……. Many themes do not accommodate ads at the top of the page.

Frankly, I feel sad that such obtrusive, banner ads might lead many surfers to stop using WordPress web sites……. That would not help anybody.

I have come across some side bar ads that partially cover up the cookies notification……. In some cases, I had to try two or three times before the cookies notification was able to respond……. If only a small portion of the notification is covered, the link works okay.

With all that technology is able to do these days, it seems like there is an answer to these situations that will make everything presentable and workable.

Again, thank you all at WordPress for caring and working on a solution.

    Hi WordPress,

I’m just thinking that WordPress might like to know that some ads really do slow down a blog site……. Some sites I’ve visited are much slower than others……. It might be due to a particular ad, a particular theme, or maybe the content of the post — or all that combined.

I don’t know how visitors might feel about that…….. Might they just give up and move on elsewhere?

I’m glad for your expertise in these things and your care……. Have a great day.

  • Ads would not slow down a site, as we only load ads on a site after the rest of the site has completely finished loading. If a site is slow, it’s likely due to the amount of widgets added to the site, how many posts load on the front page, the number and size of images loading on the page, etc. For something like that the site owner would need to contact us so we can help them investigate.

    Hi kokkieh,

You’ve got me thinkin’ and thunkin’……. Sites that I visit often have the same setup with widgets, posts, images, etc. that they have had for quite some time……. But, they have slowed down a lot since ads have been added……. What can I say? …….

Puzzled, I even had another surprise this morning……. Sites with a clearly Christian outlook had ads today that were totally in opposition to their posted message……. If they realized that, they would feel awful…….

I don’t have the time to check out sites with other views to see if they have ads that are contrary to their views, but it would be interesting to find out……. Since wordpress dot com finds it necessary to use ads, there should be a means of sorting ads out to appropriately fit the sites they are displayed on……. Even the frequent visitors to any site would appreciate that…….

Because you mentioned that the slowing down of a site might depend on how many posts load on the front page, I checked my settings and they still show that only one post is to be displayed at a time……. But, in viewing my site, it has an infinite scrolling of posts……. So, I just don’t understand.

The “slow” sites I referred to above seem to also have infinite scrolling now, although I don’t remember what they had awhile back…….

I just think about these things and hope all things work out to everyone’s satisfaction.

Thank you all for everything, and know that you are all appreciated……. Have a great day.

  • Yeah, sadly we aren’t able to customize the ads that appear on each site, but I have let our ads team know about the one that was blank except for a woman’s face.

The ads help pay for the cost of our servers, employees, etc. Paid plans help offset those costs, so we can take the ads off paid sites.

I took a quick look at your site to see if I could figure out why it would have slowed down. I noticed you have a maximum of 1 blog post per “load” … which may actually be making your site less efficient since it needs to constantly load up infinite scroll stuff.

You might experiment with setting it to 5 or so. And then you could also consider using a theme that displays “excerpts” … that way you won’t be loading up the same ending images repeating. Gateway might be a good fit for your site.

    Hi supernovia,

Thank you for your reply……. As far as I have seen, my site works fast, so it is okay……. I was referring to WP sites that I visit frequently……. So, I don’t know what their settings are, but lately they are running very slowly……. They function better once the ads are fully up.

Because software can accomplish so many things these days, it seems reasonable to be able to have them apply appropriate ads to the various kinds of blog sites……. Then they will make life better for everyone concerned, instead of being more challenging.

And now I need to start a new thread on a security alert that appeared on my site….. I saw that same security alert on a different WP site yesterday……. Think I have too many concerns.

    Thank you all.

  • @96isaiah We’ll file that feature request and close this thread. Thanks!
