Banging my head against the wall

I’ve been going round in circles all day trying to set up email addresses for my domain. Because I have to point my Nameservers at WordPress, I can’t use the email options my domain provider has made available. My only option then is Google Apps.

However, the instructions on WordPress for setting up Google Apps with my site simply just don’t work.

Following the instructions to the letter, it gives me a TXT record to add to my DNS configuration. According to the WordPress instructions, I then have to enter that into the ‘Verification Code’ box in the domains section of my dashboard. Upon doing this, a box comes up saying ‘Your Google Validation String should look like this: googleffffff12345’ If I hit the ‘Generate DNS records’ box again, it’ll then fill up my records with a bunch of text.

Once I save that, I then try to verify it through Google Apps, as per the instructions from WordPress, only to be told:

Verification failed. Your verification DNS TXT record has the wrong content.
    Show found DNS TXT records
    v=spf1 include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all

Any assistance would be well received as I have no hair left to tear out. Thank you.

Update, I tried replacing the line which says v=spf1 include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all with the verification code google gave me and it seems to have worked – perhaps you guys would like to add that to your instructions, as its the most important part and is not there.

The problem I now have is that I can receive emails, but it won’t let me send any. Is this a case of waiting for a while or is there a problem?

    G’day,
I’m sorry to hear you are experiencing these frustrations. Will you please file a support ticket with Staff and provide all details to them in it? Here’s the link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

I second this! That’s the only advice that worked for me, and the support instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/#using-google-apps-for-domains
don’t help with that final step!

I am still using my original email host after moving two sites onto WordPress.COM. You need to make an A record and MX record that points back to your original mail servers (took 2 lines in the DNS mapping section..

This is what it took to keep my old mail working. I still have to pay my old host for the mail service but the cost is less than the original hosting.

    A mail 209.255.255.255
    MX 10 mail.old-site.com.

You need to get the IP numbers from your old host.

It was a bit confusing both times, but Google is not your only option. I struggled with the Google instructions and finally gave up.
