  Hi is there a way to place a picture banner across the top of the site instead of just the text?

  It depends on the theme, some themes have custom headers, only with these themes the header can be changed. With other themes this is not possible. So if you go to your current theme, if custom header is not an option, you need to choose a different theme to change the header image.
