Banner photo homepage- wanting to change it-nothing works-help??

Dear, I have been trying to change my photo banner on top of my site, however all the predefined answers here, I have tried everything and it doesn’t work. When I set the desired picture as a ‘featured image’ it does appear but only with that post. However what I would want is to change my banner on my homepage of my blog. As now it still contains your standard image. Can you please help me and explain the several steps please? Thank you very much !!! Regards, Elke
