I have a couple of blogs I am starting. I am most definitely a newb and muddling my way through. I am currently reading “WordPress for Dummies”, so yes, I am making an attempt to figure out most issues on my own before posting in this forum. But I wanted to ask you for clarification on something I read. If I use a WordPress.com site, will I be able to post advertiser banners on my site? I think I read that I would need plug-ins to post banners and the wordpress.com option does not allow plug ins. Is this correct?

Advertising is, except for a couple very narrow exceptions, not allowed on wordpress.COM. For the exceptions, see the last sentence under “Affiliate marketing blogs” in the bottom set of bullet points in the “types of blogs” link below.

Since I have not banners that I absolutely must run now—how smart would it be for me to keep wordpress.com and then migrate to wordpress.org once I reach that stage. Is it easy to convert or do you have to basically start over?

Well if you’re new and don’t know much of the basics for self hosting at .ORG, I suggest stay here at .COM until you know what you’re doing. You only have two posts also on your blog. So maybe start here and build a fan base first until you have the traffic to justify having ads and moving to your own host. Many people think they’ll make money quickly but the truth is most bloggers don’t make that much money at all through Adsense. Unless you can get individual sponsors.
You can have banners for legitimate charities. But just as long as you don’t make money though.

That would be my plan pornstar. As long as the dashboard works similarly on wordpress.com and wordpress.org I should be fine. If there are significant differences then I would prefer to self-host from the get-go.

The dashboard are the same. However, there are sigficant differences as there is no FTP access to blogs being free hosted on this mutliuser blogging platform. We cannot access and edit the underlying templates for our themes at wordpress.COM and there are no plugins at wordpress.com
