Basic editing?
-
I have spoken with a volunteer and she was unable to do anything but post links to pages that don’t answer my questions at all. I am looking to start using WordPress instead of WIX and All I get is the run around. I am asking some basic questions about how to edit a site without having to purchase the most expensive plan just to see how and what your editing tools can do and how the work. Such as placing a photo or text where I want them to be as apposed to a non editable template. In WIX I can start with a blank template and just drag and drop elements and type. I can then scale and change font’s and sizes just like you would in Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. It seems from what I have seen so far, that a simple customized site is not possible without extensive HTML and CSS knowledge. Am I better off with WIX? Should I go back to Dreamweaver? I’m looking to move from WIX because they are having issues and have dropped support, but it seems your support in not any better. Please convince me. I need someone to actually answer my questions, not forward me a hundred forum links to search through. Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is the third time you have posted duplicate content. My answer at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wix-user-looking-to-change?replies=14#post-2864404 is correct.

If you cannot cope with reading written instructions and acting on what they provide then you may need to hire a web host and an expert and set up a wordpress.ORG install instead. Code Poet is a directory of WordPress professionals, web designers, and developers brought to you by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and the largest operator of WordPress sites. Here’s the link http://directory.codepoet.com/ if you want to hire someone.

Yes, and it was not an answer, it was a referral. I did as you asked and typed in modlook and now I’m speaking with you again and not a wordpress. I went to your link and surfed every link. ALL it said was these things can be done, but little to explain how. Did you read my last question, because I now have spent 4 hours reading nothing but pitches and Nothing of substance.

I already posted this in the other thread at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wix-user-looking-to-change?replies=14#post-2864404
Does Customize let me edit HTML?
No. Customize allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. If you require this functionality, please consider moving your blog to a web host that supports theme code modifications. You can read more about why here http://support.wordpress.com/code/, and find a suitable host here http://get.wp.com/hosting/.

I am an expert in Dreamweaver and am a time winner of the Photoshop Guru award. Additionally I have been working with computers sense 1988, so it’s not as though I haven’t been around the block a few times. Where is a site map? Is there a tool bar for editing. Are templates the only way you can use WordPress?

Where is a site map?
All WordPress.COM support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/

Is there a tool bar for editing.
Provided one purchases an upgrade that includes the ability to edit some CSS the answer is yes. However, do NOT expect the same capability one has on a wordpress.ORG software install. See here for details on purchasing an annually renewable upgrade https://wordpress.com/pricing/ that contains a custom design upgrade required for CSS editing.

Are templates the only way you can use WordPress?
Yes. From https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wix-user-looking-to-change?replies=14#post-2864404
WordPress.COM is a multi user blogging platform with off the shelf themes. We wordpress.com bloggers do not have access to the template files underlying our themes on wordpress.COM hosted blogs and cannot edit them. This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme use the same underlying template found on the live demo site for each theme.
-
There is no FTP access to any wordpress.com sites. The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.See:
Themes »Uploading Custom Themes
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/WordPress.com sites have some built in plugins http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/. However, if you are reading anything that makes you think that we bloggers can install plugins, advertising, custom themes or third party themes on sites hosted by wordpress.COM, then you are mistaken/misinformed. We have never had that ability. You are confusing wordpress.COM hosted blogs and wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.
Blogger installed plugin capability does not exist on WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality. For that type of functionality, you’d need a self-hosted WordPress.ORG software install running on a paid web hosting service.

Yes I know. you posted it. And I read it. Not to sound offensive, but I need to talk with someone else. You are simply stuck on pre-approved talking points and are not actually answering my questions. I’m sorry if I’m annoying you. I asked if you could visit my existing site to see what I’m wanting to create, and if it is either possible to do on wordpress or not. I do not wish to buy your product before knowing what it is actually capable of. I understand you have a lot of users and many people are happy with it. I want to know why. Ease of use, actual customizing and customer support don’t seem to be the reasons.
-
amateurs is the perfect moniker for you as you have done nothing but waist both of our time. You could have simply said wordpress is a popular platform based on template designs with limited CSS editing, designed for amateurs and not for people who wish to design custom sites.
-
-
There is no need for you to insult me or anyone else. Reading is a required skill for website building and support documentation https://en.support.wordpress.com/ is very descriptive. Also believe me when I say that my waist measurement is not large. I am a perfect size 6.
-
I was not insulting you at all, nor was I trying to say you are large. In fact you insulted me when you made the comment that I can not “Cope” with reading. I am very capable of that, and as I said I read what you sent me and went to the links provided. I have looked at several of our answers to others questions and their responses have been similar to mine, in that you are not answering the question, but rather just posting endless links to places that don’t answer the question and have already been read by those asking the question.

We all use support documentation.
As you said in the first thread:
I guess my biggest issue is there is no tool bar, and even paid plans are very constrictive on what can be done.
I responded with this;
Indeed. Alternatively, you can hire a web host and then set up your own wordpress.ORG software install. Please see Moving to Self-Hosted WordPress https://move.wordpress.com
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

Thank you for your attempt, but I already own Dreamweaver CC and it is much more suited for my needs. My reasons for looking into wordpress were two fold. One to make a site for a customer of mine that he could easily edit like WIX, so I didn’t have to every time he want’s to make an update to a picture. His site is not a template site. It has custom backgrounds and interactive infographics. At least as far as I have been able to discern, that is not the case with wordpress. I also have a couple clients that want sites and asked about wordpress, but they too will have custom graphics and layouts. If I am going to need to have it hosted elsewhere anyway I’ll use Dreamweaver rather than WordPress.org program. Thanks I won’t be anymore bother.

Best wishes with your WordPress.ORG sites.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, support docs and support forums, and many people get confused about the two.
The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
This is wordpress.COM support. We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
(1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
(2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.com/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.
Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpackHowever, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service
