There are two versions of WordPress:
1. WordPress.com. Fully hosted including backups and security. You can choose from a range of themes, integrate popular social networks and customize the appearance of your site to varying degrees, depending on the plan you choose.
2. WordPress.org. Create a self hosted site where you can install plugins and use custom themes.
The differences are explained in more detail here:
It has custom backgrounds and interactive infographics. At least as far as I have been able to discern, that is not the case with wordpress.
Based on what you have mentioned so far, WordPress.org would provide you with the flexibility you need but it would be more ‘hands on’.
