Basic questions

I was trying to add a new menu item and this being WordPress and so unintuitive to do, most of my existing menu hierarchy items have disappeared. Is there a way to recover them? I think I pressed “delete” during the attempt, thinking that the menu item that I created would be deleted, not what I already had there. The menu arrangement on my homepage is still holding up, as in not having being destroyed by what I did.
I’d like to undo whatever I did and just create a new menu item or two in the Dashboard section. I did watch a video on how to do that but it didn’t match up with my dashboard or something. I’m running a years old version of the Dashboard, which doesn’t use blocks.
This is reminding me of why I didn’t use WordPress much and for years…it’s just such a pain to work effectively with it.
