Baskerville 2: Bottom Padding Collapses on Blog Feed

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I’m using the superb Baskerville 2 theme and have set my homepage to display latest posts.

    Oscillate Modulate

Unfortunately, the bottom padding between separate posts in the masonry layout sometimes collapses so that they appear as one item. Please see this image:

    </

It can generally be fixed by refreshing the browser, but I suspect it may be a bug. I’d be very grateful for any assistance you can offer with this issue. I’m using the latest version of Chrome of Windows 10 Pro X64.

    Many thanks

After further testing, I have been unable to replicate this issue in Firefox – so it’s obviously a problem with the way Chrome handles the masonry layout.

Here’s another example of the unequal padding or “gap” between posts in Chrome Version 77.0.3865.120 (Official Build) (64-bit):

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Matt –

The screen shots are super helpful, thank you for those. Do you have the same issue with the display when looking in a different browser? One other quick thing to check is to try and disable all your extensions in Chrome and see if the display issue persists afterwards.

    Hi Liz

Thank you very much for getting back to me. In answer to your question:

    1. Firefox is 100% fine (thus far). So this issue isn’t intrinsic to the theme, it’s to do with the way that different browsers display it. Might also have something to do with the responsive design?
    2. Edge exhibits the unequal gap issue (as per 2nd pic) but doesn’t collapse the padding to zero (as per 1st pic).
    3. Internet Explorer also has the unequal gap issue without collapsing the padding.
    4. Brave (based on Chromium) also has the unequal gap issue without collapsing the padding.

I haven’t tested with Opera and can’t test with Safari as I’m a Windows user.

Disabling ALL extensions in Chrome makes no difference, I’m sorry to say. It was worth a try, though. Any other suggestions much appreciated!

I might try contacting Anders Norén, the theme’s developer, although I suspect he will say that it’s a WordPress.com issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Matt

Just updated Chrome to Version 78.0.3904.70 (Official Build) (64-bit). Here’s another screenshot showing the unequal AND collapsed padding:

    Thanks

    Matt

  • I can confirm that I do see this at https://oscmod.home.blog/ under Chrome 78.0.3904.70.

I don’t see it in the demo at https://wordpress.org/themes/baskerville/ but that’s Baskerville 1. Baskerville 2 is exclusive to WordPress.com.

In the demo at https://wordpress.com/theme/baskerville-2 I do see the problem.

I have filed a bug report at https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/1607

    Thanks!

    Hi Macmanx

That’s great. Thank you for your response and assistance. Hope we get a fix soon!

    Hi Liz / Macmanx

UPDATE: I’ve found the cause, I think:

Baskerville 2 appears to be designed for infinite scroll. However, infinite scroll cannot be enabled if footer widgets are used. Please see this screenshot of WordPress Site Settings > Writing:

I have therefore removed all footer widgets and enabled infinite scroll. The homepage posts now have the correct padding across all of the following browsers:

    Chrome
    Brave (Chromium)
    Edge
    Internet Explorer
    Firefox

Can’t test Safari as I’m on Windows. Will test Opera tomorrow.

To be honest, I can live without footers (they don’t work very well on mobile).

Hope this helps someone else and thanks for your assistance!

    All the best

    Matt

Just tested Opera – works on that too. Please mark this as “solved”. I’ve emailed Anders to let him know.

    I’m off to bed!

    @matthewthurgood72,

On Firefox I’m still finding irregular spacing between posts on your homepage, which can easily be produced by modifying the browser window size, although (as you said above) refreshing the page typically corrects the inconsistent spacing.

I’ve also reproduced such irregularities on various sites that allow testing of a site at numerous screen resolutions, where refreshing doesn’t always correct the spacing.

Thank you for the feedback, musicdoc1. Thought I’d found a solution last night but clearly there is more to be done before this can be considered solved.

My understanding of CSS and responsive design is very limited, so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to troubleshoot.

Any idea of a rough timescale for a resolution? I don’t want to start posting regularly using a theme that contains a layout bug.

    Thanks

    Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Any idea of a rough timescale for a resolution? I don’t want to start posting regularly using a theme that contains a layout bug.

We don’t have a timeframe for that and we cannot provide an estimate. We’ll post an update on this thread when it is fixed.
