Baskerville 2 excerpt issues

I set my homepage to display blog excerpts. Refer to my blog homepage, the first three post entries on top are using manual/explicit excerpt, while older posts use auto excerpt.
Issues:
1. Excerpts displayed in homepage discarded paragraph break from the actual content. It happens to both auto excerpts and manually set excerpts. I came across some other themes (e.g. Passenger, Traveler) that also discarded breaks in auto excerpt, but they at least respect breaks in explicit excerpts. For my excerpts, text after colon (:) supposed to be on the next paragraph.2. Continue Reading link below excerpt text is not getting display for manual excerpt. Compare the first three entries (manual) with older (auto) to see the missing link.
3. A minor glitch, other elements of the theme display Chinese translation per expected, but excerpt’s Continue Reading link text seems missed out from translation 继续阅读.

The issues in 1 and 2 are both how this theme is designed to work.
For issue 3, translations on WordPress.com are done by the community, so if a particular piece of text is not appearing in the site language, it means it hasn’t been translated yet.
In this case, the Continue Reader text has been translated, but the overall translation for the theme into Chinese is only at 58% – theme translations are only deployed once they reach 85%:
If you’re willing to contribute the missing translations for your theme to take it over 85%, once a validator approves your translations those will be deployed, and they will update on your site.

Generally, may I know how do we tell if a behaviour is per theme design but not a theme bug?

By the way, for translation, is there a way to view where a particular string/text is being used in the theme? Depends on the context, the same text might need to be translated differently. There’s a “References” meta, which seems pointing to source PHP files where the text will be used. However I’m not sure where can I view/locate the PHP file.

I know, because I’ve had this question before and at that time checked the source code, and asked developers, to confirm the expected behaviour of the theme. So that’s not really something you’d be able to determine from your end :)

That’s what the file reference is for, yes, though that’s not always clear. It’s one of those things that you pick up with experience if you contribute enough translations :)
But that’s why all languages have validators, native speakers of the language that also have lots of experience translating WordPress, who have to approve any translation before it goes live.
My advice is follow your instincts and translate the way that makes the most sense to you. If a validator disagrees, they’ll change it instead of approving. You’re also welcome to post in our translation sub-forum if you’re unsure, and want to get a second opinion or just clarification on how the original string is being used:

Aha… Out of curiosity, did the theme developer explain why they want to discard paragraph breaks and hide the Continue Reading link for manual excerpt?
My advice is follow your instincts and translate the way that makes the most sense to you. If a validator disagrees, they’ll change it instead of approving.
I take your advice and trust validators :) Added some translations for Chinese (China) and Chinese (Taiwan). Some of the approved translations seem to assume different context. Comment feature of the L10N tool is not working, nothing happens after clicking Post Comment button.

Regarding stripped tags in excerpts, that’s actually the default. Some themes use their own logic to keep them, but in most cases they’ll be removed:
I like to feature haiku on my blog sometimes, and I’ve been annoyed about losing line breaks. I have found though that I can add line breaks when I need to by adding the
<br>tag in my manually set excerpts. Just note they will still be stripped out the descriptions for search engines and social media.Comment feature of the L10N tool is not working, nothing happens after clicking Post Comment button.
Hmmm, could you check your browser to see if anything could be blocking that? One simple test is to switch browsers to see if the issue persists.

Regarding stripped tags in excerpts, that’s actually the default.
Regardless if the design is from theme or from WordPress default, that is odd design to me. It probably makes sense for some use cases in auto excerpt, but I can’t think of any reason to do this for manual excerpt. Anyway, good to know that there’s a workaround, thanks for sharing the tips :)
Actually, the more bizarre thing is about the removal/hiding of Continue Reading/Read More link for manual excerpt alone, although I can’t tell if it is caused by theme or WordPress.

I just retried in Firefox (v83), same outcome as Chrome (v87) under Mac OS 10.14.6. Other buttons in the tool (e.g. Copy, Suggest translation, Reject) seem working fine, except the Post Comment btn. Browser didn’t throw any error or popup blocker warning.

The Post Comment button is working for me – FF 83. But I noticed it takes a few seconds after clicking it before it posts.
Try posting your comment and then don’t press anything else for a few seconds. Does it post?
That said, I’m not sure how useful adding a comment will be there – comments are not specific to a translation, but is for discussing the string across all the different translations, and is not really used very much in WordPress translations.
If you have a question/comment about a particular string, you’re more likely to get an answer if you post in our translations forum instead.

Just to share my new discovery. The discard of manual excerpt‘s line break happens only to posts created by using Block Editor. For posts created with Classic Editor, breaks explicitly set in manual excerpt will not be discarded in display.
