Baskerville 2 – Fonts, names
-
Hi,
I am trying to create a web page usinf free WordPress.com, The smaller description headline would need some colour, because other wise it cannot be read because of the background photo. Is it possible for me to get some colours to the fonts in this free version?
Another question is, that when there are the buttons Home – Contact – Blog, is it possible for me to replace those names with my own names?
Thank you,
MikkoThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi –
My suggestion is to find a theme that is going to display the header area of the site in the desired manner. Take a look at the options here: https://wordpress.com/themes/
For the menu, yes, it can be customized. You can change the text to be whatever you want. https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
-
Thank you lizkarkoski,
I found already the solution for the first question, which is, that I simply manipulated the background photo.
And it is nice to learn, that menus can be customized.
If you are willing to help me, there has still emerged one more question: I am using that kind of an option of this theme, where the whole article can be read only after clicking “Continue reading” with the arrow. Can that text be changed? )into my own language)
-
The Read More tag is customizable. See here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/more-tag/#adding-and-customizing-the-more-tag
-
Thank you again.
It seems that this example of yours is for the situation one has created “”Continue reading” himself. With this theme, in the theme side, you can either choose if you will show the total article, or choose the option, where only a part of the article is shown, and I like it. You can get to read the whole article by clicking “Continue reading”.
I tried to find the HTML situation, where I could replace the text, but was not able to find that kind of situation. Although my site is in Finnish, you can see in my blog department (replaced with the word “Informaatio” several articles, and they are all having there “Continue reading”. I wonder if you could look at my site, and having done show me a way to rplace the texts, if it is possible.
Thank you so much of your help,
Mikko

Also, when there is an article, there is a headline, and then there is a text of that article, I feel that the text starts all to low and should start more above and closer to the headline. Is there any way in this theme to do something to it?
Thank you,Mikko

Hi Mikko,
I tried to find the HTML situation, where I could replace the text
Do you mean you want to change “Continue Reading” to the Finnish equivalent? If so, changing the blog language should do that:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/language-settings/#blog-language
Or would you like to customise the text (see option 3) for the read more links?
I feel that the text starts all to low and should start more above and closer to the headline. Is there any way in this theme to do something to it?
By default, there isn’t a way to adjust this spacing through the Customiser but it would be possible with custom CSS but this is only available on Premium and Business plans.

Thank you. gemmacevans,

I’ve also got one more problem:
In my home page (front page) I have named the headline there “Johdanto” = “Introduction” in English.
For some reason or another before that word there comes the word “Suojattu” = “Protected” in English.
What is that? Do you know, how would I get rid of that word?Mikko

Hello Mikko,
I had thr Finnish language on in the site settings. I cannot get “Continue reading” changed into my language,
All translations on WordPress.com are contributed by our users, and it looks like all the options for “Continue reading” haven’t been translated into Finnish yet:
The translation for your theme is also still under 85%, meaning those translations are not live yet.
If you’re willing, you can contribute to these translations, and once a validator for Finnish approves them, they will be live on your site.
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
In my home page (front page) I have named the headline there “Johdanto” = “Introduction” in English.
For some reason or another before that word there comes the word “Suojattu” = “Protected” in English.
That appears because you have that page password-protected. The only way to remove that word is using custom CSS, and you’ll need to be on the Premium or Business Plan to do that.

Thank you kokkieh,
The “Continue reading” problem is not such a big deal for me, I just wanted to know, if I could have put here other words (in my own language).
But about that password-protected thing: Is my web page still that kind, that when people know the address, it is visible for them? I do not mind the extra word there, but I ma now just concerned, that it is availbale for the people to see,

I might also ask, that when I would want my articles 1-9 appear in the order from the 1st to the 9th, why I cannot do it? I changed the publicity dates, but the articles do not find their places according to those dates,

Hi Mikko –
When visiting the site, I go to https://ukkoniemi.wordpress.com/blog/, here I can see the posts listed in the desired order of 1-9. 1 being the first post, 9 being the last. Did you still need help getting that situation or are you happy with how they are listed now?
-
The way the site looks to me, article 5 is before article 4, and 8 before 7, although the dates of theit publishing would make me assume, that they would be in the right order. Do you see 4 before 5 and 7 before 8?

Hi there, the order can appear a bit odd in your theme, because it depends also on the “height” of the article plus its image. For more exact ordering, try choosing a theme that puts articles in an exact grid rather than a “mosaic” … or you can pick on that does not display articles in a column.
Reading through these other questions and what not, I just wanted to note a few other things that may help:
– The manipulation to the background photo doesn’t apply as well on different screen sizes. But if you made a more subtle but larger shadowy area, going for the darker colors of the lake, that could work well. Try viewing your site with the mobile and tablet view under Customize and you’ll see what I mean.
– You actually CAN use your own “Read More” text if you’re using “more” links. They can even vary from article to article: https://en.support.wordpress.com/more-tag/#adding-and-customizing-the-more-tag
– Your site is currently visible but hidden from search engines. If you want to make it totally private until you’re ready, head to https://wordpress.com/settings and adjust the privacy settings there. Although, I would encourage you to just go for it… if you look at some of the most popular sites out there, you’ll find most were not perfect when they became popular :) The beauty of the web is that you can keep improving and changing things as you go along.
Lastly: just for clarity, I’d encourage you to make a new thread for questions that aren’t related to the original post. Volunteers will be less likely to be overwhelmed, so you’ll likely to get faster answers, plus your topics will be more likely to help others who are looking for the same questions.
I hope this helps!

Noting as well, the “Read More” text customization only works if you’re using Full Post under Customize > Content Options in your theme. So you’ll need a “Read More” plus customizations (if you want them) in all of your longer posts.

Dear Supernovia,
I want to thank you and all the other helpers. I think with your support I have now been able to do, what I could do. (Thank you Supernovia especially for pointing me to check what the site looks like in different sizes)
