Baskerville 2: Header image issue

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi WordPress,

With the Baskerville 2 theme used on bijbelwijs.wordpress.com I run into the issue that when hiding the site identity and subtitle, the header image is only shown partly.
I’ve tried using a space, dot, tilde etc for the site title, but that obviously also displays as the web browser title so not good.
The header image is requested to be 1140×221 by the theme, and with the identity and subtitle shown that is completely shown, but when disabling those overlay texts, only a portion of the image is shown.
This is quite a serious and annoying concern, as I can’t get the header image to display correct without text overlay – but the header image already contains the text in the picture (as do many wordpress sites).

Hope you can fix this – thank you!

  • Hi there – Baskerville 2 is designed so that the header stretches taller to accommodate a site title and tagline; it isn’t a fixed height otherwise.

The only way to make the header taller without a site title and tagline displayed would be with some Custom CSS, which is available with the Premium or Business plans.

If you’re not ready to upgrade and want to keep Baskerville 2, you could try moving the text in your image more into the middle, so that it works at the current height.

Hmm, that’s pretty annoying… The theme asks for a 1440×221 picture, but doesn’t display it like that under all conditions (like when header text or social menu is off). It should just keep a fixed height.
Its not just the text in the middle; but lower and upper regions of the picture getting lost.
I won’t upgrade to Premium or Business for just a CSS tweak due to uncontrolled behaviour in the theme…
Nothing you can do to tip the makers of the theme?
    Thank you for your efforts!

  • I definitely understand your frustration. We aren’t able to change the way Baskerville 2’s header is displayed now, though, as that would affect all users of the theme. Another option would be to find a theme whose header area works more the way you’d like, perhaps also taking advantage of a logo feature.

Just let me know if I can help further.

Hi, thanks for triggering the idea of using the logo feature.
For anyone who runs in the same or similar issues with header layout, here’s a solution that works great:

Make a spacer image (1x55px) which is fully transparant and set it as the site’s logo. This fills up vertical space and triggers the header image to be displayed correctly!

  • Clever workaround! Glad you’re all set. :)
