Strictly speaking the old classic editor never went away. If you choose to use the old editor, your preference is remembered in a cookie and the next time you edit/create a post you will automatically get the old editor.

Did the forum topic “Removing the scrollbar from the post editor one of the worst “improvements” yet” disappear? It’s no longer listed in the forum topics and even Search doesn’t bring it up. Is it because I posted and people could click through to my blog to see my loud complaints?

The Beep Beep Boop “editor” is atrocious, an abomination. If anyone wants something like that, there’s another platform that specializes in it. It’s called Tumblr.

Count your blessings if the cookie works and takes you directly to the old editor. It doesn’t work for me. But don’t get too excited. The “classic” editor WILL go away as soon as the devs think they have the new one working well enough. I say that based on 7 years of experience using WP. -
Help. I now click on ‘Dashboard’ and I don’t get any reaction whatsoever!
When I click on my previous Log-in tab in Firefox nothing happens.If I click on ‘New Post’ I just get the beep beep boop cr*p and the option to create a new post but no access to all my other posts.
If I click on the ‘Switch to Classic Mode’ button absolutely nothing happens!Can anyone help?

I have generally been supportive of most wordpress.com upgrades, for example the recent upgrade to allow the top editor bar to float with scrolling is a HUGE timesaver.
Unfortunately, the Beep Beep Boop “upgrade” is a crash and burn moment in user interface design.
Top 10 reasons the new WordPress Beep Boob editor is a stunning failure.
1. It turns a process that used to take 1-2 seconds into something that takes several seconds, sometimes as long as 30 seconds. My timing this morning was 17 seconds to get the create a new post dialog. A second attempt took 32 seconds after I cleared the crash dialog (see below).
2. It is visually annoying. It makes me want to scream at the screen.
3. It makes wordpress.com seem juvenilized.
4. It is inconsistent with the rest of the wp.com user experience. For example, no “beep boop” appears when you try to create a new page.
5. It presents a smaller editor than we used to get, which isn’t fully representative of the CSS settings for width of your theme.
6. It was foisted on us with no warning. And this is the thing I hate the most, many of these “upgrades” just appear overnight. Microsoft learned this lesson of just foisting unwanted upgrades on end users without notice and allows you to opt-out. You should learn this lesson too. New is not always better.
7. It crashes:

8. The “Welcome to an easier way to create on WordPress.com! Missing the old editor? No worries, just switch to classic mode. “ feature doesn’t seem to “stick”.
9. It comes up in text editor mode, more work, more wait to switch to visual editor mode.
10. When ever I accidentally stumble on it now, I realize my mistake and back out of it, and find the correct link to bring up the real editor. When users actively work to avoid using a new piece of software, because it wastes time, annoys them, and crashes, you know you have a MEGAFAIL on your hands.
Whoever came up with this idea, along with the person who approved implementing it deserves a virtual 2×4 upside the head to knock some sense in them.
For me, it may be the tipping point to abandon wordpress.com and go to a paid service where I at least can control my own user experience by choosing not to install inane upgrades.

To those who have to click back to the old ‘classic’ Dashboard. You’re lucky – clicking on the link to the old dashboard leads to no reaction whatsoever. Clicking on Dashboard anywhere goes nowhere!
I left Photobucket when it moved to a ‘user friendly’ interphase that enabled people to more quickly download and edit pics of their dog/dinner to facebook and became unusable as a serious gallery link to my WordPress.com site. Now I feel like abandoning that site too before I get a ‘one touch to Twitter’ button.
I mean, ‘Beep, Beep, Boop’! Is this being programmed by three year olds?

Excuse me, but are the whole “beep beep bop” editor and these weird “yay, you just wrote a new post, looks good!” messages supposed to be cute? Because they aren’t. All they are is a bad mix of nuisance, slow performance, and being downright unprofessional. I don’t want a machine to tell me “so and and so many people find your blog awesome”, because, can’t people say that for themselves? This whole editor-makeover gives me the feeling we bloggers are perceived as a little dumb and only here only for the attention. Please, give us the old editor back, and by that I don’t meant the back route of clicking around to get there. Sometimes the new editor doesn’t load at all, or makes it impossible to save new posts. It’s also a real problem for smaller screens slower devices – welcome to the mobile age. You call it enhancement or progress? Cause it surely isn’t. There is a perfectly fitting German word for what you did – “verschlimmbessern”, which means “making something a thousand times worse by trying to make it better”.

For those who may not know, there’s a way to restore the recently vanished inner scroll bar next to the text window that used to be in the “classic” editor. But it’s tricky to do.
First, after you’re in the “classic” editor, you have to look at the top of the screen and click on “Screen Options.” When the drop-down stuff appears, you need to un-check the box next to “Expand the editor to match the window height.” That makes no sense, because it doesn’t mention the text-area scroll bar, but that’s how to do it. After you un-check the box, the inner scroll bar will function as it used to, before the programmers removed it.
However, the software won’t remember your choice, and that box will not stay unchecked. As soon as you save what you’ve written, the box becomes checked again and the inner scroll bar vanishes. If you want to continue editing with the inner scroll bar, each time you save your draft you’ll need to go back to “Screen Options” and un-check the box next to “Expand the editor to match the window height.”
It’s clumsy, time-consuming, and non-intuitive, but it works. So while we’re still allowed to use the “classic” editor, you might as well use use all its features.

This is the second time (that I’ve seen) someone has mentioned that in this thread. Could you please point to the Staff reply that mentions that this change is coming?

However, the software won’t remember your choice, and that box will not stay unchecked.
I have done several tests and in my case the software remember my choice.

@justjennifer As I said, I base my comment on 7 years’ experience on WP, not on anything said in this thread. I recall only one time when WP rolled back a change, and that was simply a change in the default setting for something. Very minor.

However like you the checkbox is ticked whenever I return to the editor so galois must be lucky! ;-)

Good for you. Just moments ago was my third test today of seeing if it would “stick” after I hit Save Draft. Nope. And I don’t think I’m alone.
If WordPress intends to torment us by not making this permanent, just tell us. I’ll stop using the damn service, period.

leeinblack, as galois said, the fix was briefly mentioned in the scroll-bar thread, but many may have missed it. I thought it should be mentioned here because this thread is far more active.

@galois, The internal scrollbar “fix” does not stay after I’ve saved/updated a post. So, it’s not useful for either making minor changes/edits to previous posts, or when writing a new longer piece that one needs to save frequently. Who wants to add 3 additional clicks every time after saving?
The internal scrollbar needs to be a saved option.
This is on the old, “classic”, mostly functional editor.
