Beep Beep Boop screen is a joke. Is this a glitch?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Monday morning, 8/18.

    First thing I did online was go to my blog, create new post, uncheck the damn Screen Option, resize the textarea, dump in random text to get scrollbar, do Save Draft — and POOF! Watch the scrollbar disappear and the Screen Option UNcheck.

    So another day of no new blog posts from me…

    I’ve had enough of this. I’ve asked my readers to email WordPress.

    Question for Happiness Engineers:

    You can resolve a lot of anxiety around here by answering one simple question that has nothing to do with bug fixes. The question is: Will WordPress retain the “classic” editor as a permanent option?

    You’ve already told us that “classic” will be available while you debug Beep Beep Boop. That’s being interpreted as: “It’ll be gone soon.” Is that the answer you intended to give? We need an unambiguous “yes” or “no” answer. Actually, what we need is an unambiguous “yes,” because anything else can be interpreted as “No.”

    @whos8that0girl: sniff, sniff… I’m with you. And, ever since beep-beep-boop came on the scene, my cat won’t come into the house anymore…

    I hesitate to mention this here — because I don’t want WP to mess with it — but the simplest way (mentioned previously be a few others) to find OE (Old Editor) is to go to the front page of your blog site > click on the name of your site in the upper left-hand corner of the screen > select and click New from the drop down menu (NOT New Post or New Page or New Anything else, just NEW). This miraculously and continuously shows the classic OE page — without any interference or appearance of beep-beep-boop or its minions of hypnotizing, unproductive bubbles. Please try this and see if it works for you. It has been a sanity-saving grace for the last week since this beep-beep-boop nonsense has been going on. Oh yeah, there’s still not internal scrollbar when you get to OE… but displeasure at that disappearance of ease and function now feels like ancient history. [OMG, I just discovered a little Check Spelling clickerdoodle at the top left of this comment box. Has that been there all along? Anyway, that one small step for spellcheck encourages this Virgo writer. Thanks.)

    Thank you Susan! (WP – don’t touch it! ;-0 )

    Son of a gun! It works! Click on “new” and up it comes. Great. Now, until they decide to replace it with something stupider, I can continue to write and edit like a grownup.

    I understand that WordPress wants to come up with new and improved features for us and I appreciate the effort. I also know that change is difficult for everyone.

    That said, I’m at a loss for why WP would create a new post editor that actually takes longer to load than the old one. While I much prefer the old editor right now because those of us who actually create content don’t always do it on a laptop, iPad or smartphone, but an actual CPU with a large screen.

    I’m sure the creators of this editor did it while spending their time looking at a larger screen, too. I would love it if WP would give bloggers the option in their dashboard/settings to make the classic editor the default option.

    Thanks

    WordPress, catch a clue. This new “beep beep boop” interface is a terrible idea. It’s like the “anime” designs Acura and Mazda adopted, which made their customers turn away in droves. Making adults feel like children, and professional writers at that, is a really bad idea. The “classic” editor works great, we trust it, and we write into it with confidence. If WordPress persists in giving me a downgraded, infantile editing tool, I don’t know what I’ll do, but I’ll definitely be looking for new options.

    Not only is the interface juvenile, but the load times are unpredictable and much slower. I want to go from idea to post in a short time, and trust that I’ll have control. Now I’m slowed down. Worse, I don’t trust an interface that behaves erratically and looks like it was made for a child.

    Checking back in after almost a week and not surprised Beepety Boop has garnered so much disgust. What i find completely RIDICULOUS is how the new editor basically casts aside ALL THE WORK that went into the media/image upgrade of a few months ago! Absolutely backwards thinking is involved here! I’m grateful the old editor is still available but we all know it’s on life support at this point.
    My blog is picture heavy and Beepety Boop doesn’t allow easy image manipulation I’ll have to move it elsewhere.

    @davidderrick

    Also, why, when I click New Post, does it give me the last draft I was editing? New Post should mean New Post!

    Note that the new editor saves posts that you were working on in the browser, but it won’t show up in Dashboard > Posts > All Posts as an autosave. So if you accidentally close a tab or click back with an in-progress post, it will be there the next time you click New Post.

    Why is the background blue? It wasn’t that long ago that we had the ability to change the color of the background on the administrative pages, including the editor. That was a very welcomed change. Hope to see that option available in the future. In the meantime, I’m only using the classic editor.
    The new blue editor takes a very long time to load and I’m also using high speed DSL connection.

    Why no word count? Only recently WordPress has written a couple new blog posts about the longreads tag and seemed to be encouraging us to write longer posts. How do we know to use the longreads tag is we don’t know how many words are on the post?
    Preview/Publish at the bottom is not user-friendly as explained in a comment above by windwhistle.

    We are aware of these issues, and our developers are looking into this. We will try to update this thread as quickly as possible.

    @citystreams

    My biggest complaint is that my photos load wrong. They automatically link to a URL at a size and alignment that I hate. So now I have to manually correct every image three times. I want a default setting option for loading images so that this is not required.
    I also don’t like the smaller writing space. The last version was far superior.

    We are aware of this. We are looking into remembering the choice you made previously when attaching images to your post so this isn’t manually done each time. We are also aware of the smaller size so it was increased a couple days ago.

    However, in an effort to be a little more positive, I do like the drop down option for choosing previously used tags. Also the default setting to save as a draft instead of publishing could grow on me. I see the merit. This is the first time I’ve complained in eight years. I’ve been a loyal and satisfied user. Please unbreak my wordpress now. Thank you.

    Also note that whatever post you are working on is directly saved in the browser, so if you accidentally close the tab or click back, when you go back to the new editor your work will still be there.

    @wiesenirja

    Well, still the text in “visual” mode runs in a narrow column and I can’t set links in this mode any more (I have to change to “text” mode), but it’s “better than nothing”.

    Can you explain when you say set links in this mode? You should still be able to link text in the Visual editor from the new editor as seen here:

    Screen Shot

    If this is not what you mean, can you please explain? Thank you!

    @gracejiyoung

    And what is the status of making “classic” editor Screen Options permanent? Is that even on anyone’s To-Do list?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @sensuouscurmudgeon

    However, when I uncheck the screen option to “Expand the editor to match the window height,” it has no effect.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding. If you check it, the post editor will increase in size as seen here to match the length of the content you entered:

    Screen Shot

    If you uncheck it, it will appear. If this is not happening can you please open up a new thread and tag it with “modlook”.

    @goldfeesh

    How do I copy a post or request feedback?

    As I mentioned before this has been removed, but considering that a couple users in this thread have mentioned this it has been reported to our developers.

    Where is the slug box? How do I change the author? How do I change the URL?

    If you go to the Advanced Options dropdown you can add a slug and change the author as seen here:

    Screen Shot

    And where are my theme-specific options? I’m using Outspoken, which has this box in the old editor which is just gone in the new one:
    http://fishofgold.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/screen-shot-2014-08-16-at-10-19-05-am.png

    This has been noted and reported to our developers. We will try to update you as soon as we hear of them.

    @gracejiyoung

    >>>Please note that this not bring up an inner scroll bar. What will happen is that the post editor will increase in size as seen here to match the length of the content you entered:

    This is not correct. When I uncheck it, I get an internal scrollbar and the textarea remains fixed. It expands only after a Save Draft because the unchecking isn’t remembered.

    Will the unchecking be remembered? If not, tell us now. And I’ll inform my readers that my blog is dead because someone at WordPress decided to remove functionality. Thank you.

    I am speaking about the “classic” editor, in case that wasn’t clear.
