Before I buy the upgrade…

  • Unknown's avatar

…I’d like to know if it’s worth it, because my blog is to show my comics and I’d like a photoblogging type of theme with everything else on the page still visible. Can a webcomic style theme be done by editing the sandbox theme in CSS? Thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

you can if you have css knowledge. otherwise, there are photoblog themes free in wp.com, such as monotone.

  • Unknown's avatar

please note that wp.com do not offer support for css, so if you need help, you may not get it as there are very few volunteers in the forum with css knowledge. if you have minimal knowledge it’s not wise to get the upgrade then.

  • Unknown's avatar

Before you buy it, test out all the changes you’re hoping to make using the free Preview. If they work, that’ll tell you if it’s worth it to buy.

I recommend that if you know CSS… is not worth upgrading it…
Your better off with another provider that let you actually put PHP, CSS, and HTML for free. Is not worth pay $30 to edit a simple CSS Code which only cost like $0.10 to edit. Or even FREE.
And common!!! $30 to remove the restriction of 45 people or more!? Your kidding right?!
Everything on the upgrade on wordpress is a complete rip off!

There provider that give you 10GB Free Traffic! That is like a million people viewing ur forum at a time for FREE!!!!!!!

If you know website designing, PHP, CSS, HTML, FLASH, etc. I recommend that you code your own.

  • Unknown's avatar

    chiuy.
The CSS upgrade is only $15 per year. Where do you see $30/yr?

  • Unknown's avatar

Whoa! thanks for trying to influence people to go to another blog service. I dont see how $15/yr is bad really. With all the other features you get with wordpress, I dont see how another blog service could top that.

I actually looked up what a comic theme looks like, and it doesn’t even look different from the usual blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

    o. Sry. My mistake… $15 a year.
    But still huge rip off.
I’m just trying to help this guy out saying that is not worth it.
It is his question, and I thought he should have my opinions right?

If your a web designer or anything like me, this is a rip off. ^_^
They should really lower the price down.

  • Unknown's avatar

If your a web designer or anything like me, this is a rip off

Okay… but what if the guy’s not? I’m a web developer and I don’t mind paying $15 a year for the upgrade. Besides, that allows me to share my Sandbox skins with those who may want to use them.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m just saying. Is not worth it.
    $90 a year for a 25GB?
    $30 Unlimited Private User?
    $30 No Ads?
    $15 to edit the CSS?
    ——
    $165 a year?

All am trying to say is…
Why do they make the price so dang high?
I could get a really good server $5 a month.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, but that’s if you buy ALL services at once. If you’re gonna have a private blog and want to allowed an unlimited number of private users, then you just need the $30 upgrade.

    If you want no ads and the CSS upgrade, it’s just $45 a year. It all depends on what you pick;

Paying $165 a year comes down to $13.75 a month. Some decent hosting providers charge something around that price a month.

Hostgator charges $12.95 a month if you pay for a full year.

If the person is not tech savvy, doesn’t want to worry about backups and stuff like that, and for 3GB of storage for free, I still think that they might find paying, let’s say $45 a year, reasonable. Still, the choice is theirs if they want to pay for those services or not.

  • Unknown's avatar

    True true true…
    You got me there…

But still… even a techy person or a non-techy person,
paying $13.75 is a lot. And your not really getting the things that you wanted.
If you go to like, example, hostgator, $12.95, your actually paying what is worth
your money, and you get more functions, more freedom. Even though if am paying $165 for this
site right here, am still limited to my ability.
And a non-techy person, if they are willing to pay, I recommend them to make
their own site and learn, or even freewebs is quite good.
Only takes like 1 week to 1 month tops to learn all about CSS and HTML.
    Is really quite simple.
There tons of free tutors out there for that.

Hey Chiuy, you seem to love participating in the forums, which is cool. But that’s something one isn’t generally gonna find (especially a forum as interactive as this) on something like hostgator. That’s one of many advantages to wp.com which can’t be quantified in dollars. But, the bottom line is that we all have different needs and desires (for blogging); and whatever works for one, may not work for another. Ya know? So, it’s not always about money. I’d imagine that most who do the CSS upgrade at wp.com, do it because they relish the ‘hidden advantages.’ I probably sound like a suck up to you, but if ya asked around, you’d find that I’m not :P

  • Unknown's avatar

WP is really good though in my opinions.
I also made a private person blog for myself.
Is just that am limited to my factors on my skills.
And that if I were to pay, I would go to a different hosting site.
If your a really good web designer or programmer, you can easily
make a ”freewebs” site into a professional blog site.

Thanks to everyone who gave me useful information. I know little to dick about CSS, so I figure I’ll try to contact a few of my more tech-savvy friends to see if they could do it for me. Otherwise I’ll study up on it and see if I can’t do it myself eventually. Thanks again and if anyone’s got any more useful information, please feel free to give it.

Thanks a lot, Bubel. I’ve learned a bit and I think, with the links you gave me, along with a bit of help from friends, I can create the best theme for my webcomic. Thanks again for the help.
