Begging for support to add Mister Linky

  • Unknown's avatar

I frequently used Mister Linky’s widget wizard in my Blogger Blogs and since moving them over to WordPress have found that WordPress doesn’t support them! I’m so disappointed! In searching FAQ here at WordPress the only post I can find says that the concern is spamming. I’ve never once had a spamming problem with my Linkies! Please, Please, Please, how can I get support to add linkies to my posts? They are such a huge part of my blog and community of mommy bloggers! I was getting 200+ responses to my linky each week and over 500 hits just from the post with the linky. Is there anything I can do?

Is this the plugin you are referring to?

WordPress.com and wordpress.org run on different software. Here at wordpress.com we are on a multi-user blogging platform.
If you have a wordpress.org blog then you can download this plug-in and this is where to go for support http://wordpress.org/support
If you have a wordpress.com blog then you can request via a feedback that this widget be coded for wordpress MU and added as a feature.

I do note though that wordpress.com is listed and an html version is listed. Aside from that the website requires registration to obtain any information.

I also found this on the net:
Another very popular feature to the Click & Comment Day is to add a Mister Linky to the bottom of the post. This allows readers to add their link to your blog if they are participating and then they comment as well. I really enjoy seeing links added to my pages and you can visit the Mister Linky site to find more information on setting this up on your blog.
If you use WP you MUST disable the visual editor under the USER tab at the bottom left (uncheck that checkmark during the adding of Mister Linky) and you can enable it again once you make the Click & Comment post. If you edit the post at any time, you will have to add Mister Linky again unless you are a paid member. I have upgraded my account with Mister Linky to GOLD and this allows me to just use a drop-down menu and add it to my posts. MUCH easier than hassling with this but if you want to stay on the free account, follow these hints.

Is this what you are “begging for support” for?

Maybe explaining what you’re talking about and what Mister Linky is would be a better use of your time and writing. Right know, I know absolutly nothing about it, don’t have a link to go look at it, and am sitting here wondering what medication you’re on. :)

Posting before searching the forums is also not a good idea.

  • Unknown's avatar

drmike, be nice to me! I did search the forums and there’s only one post on Mister Linky and there was no support on it.

    here’s a blog with a linky: http://www.orgjunkie.blogspot.com

Your group links in and you can click to view multiple sites.

timetheif, thanks for the help, I do have a WP.com blog and if it was a blog imbedded in a site, it would work. (is that what wp.org blog is? I’m a little confused about the difference.) But according to Mister Linky’s information, there is no support on the WP.com blogs.

So, what I’m asking for is some support! I would like to use the linky’s on my WP.com blog. I want to request that this widget be ALLOWED here and so I CAN add it as a feature. Mister Linky said that I need to talk to the support here, something blocks her codes.

drmike, do you know what could be changed to allow it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Staff have previously directed that all requests for new features be made by sending in a feedback (button on the top righthand corner of any blog page). At the same time staff have also requested that you provide a link to the widget you are requesting and the reasons why you wish to see it introduced here.

WordPress.com blogs cannot be embedded in a website however wordpress.org blogs can be. The two are not the same: they run on different software and have different services and policies. Perhaps you should read the “please read me first before posting” and consider whether or not you wish to hire a web host and have him or her download a free wordpress.org blog template for you and then import your existing wordpress.com blog contents into it https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700&page&replies=1

I too would like the option of the Mr. Linky, so I will send to “the feedback button”. In the meantime, I can’t seem to figure out how to use what we do have the ability to use… I tried disabling the visual editor, but that didn’t seem to work. Obvious to me after having tried it, it is not as easy as just copying the code and pasting it into the post. As an aside, I understand that Mr Linky is the visible “thing” that seems to validate a meme, and that is why I want to use it. But, what makes i different than people just using the comments and leaving their link in that?
Let me just clarify here… I do want to use this, but I just don’t understand the techincal reason behind it, or if there is one and it’s not just perception (which can amount to a lot.)

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like Mr. Linky, too, but I doubt WP would allow it.

drmike, Mr. Linky is something you can put on the bottom of a post for people to add a link back to their site to a post they have made on the same topic. You can see popular and well-used examples of it at the Wordless Wednesday Hub at http://www.wordlesswednesday.com/

and the Works-For-Me Wednesday weekly meme at

    http://rocksinmydryer.typepad.com/shannon/2007/03/works_for_me_cl.html

I’ve seen a number of bloggers use it for a variety of things, and I’d love to be able to use it here.

I did put in a request once and was told it would be looked into, but that was a while back.

If users would be able to use their own javascripts, I could use one that would get your login cookies if you visited my blog. With them, I could have access to your blog here.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wouldn’t it geometrically increase the number of people who are commenting on your blog just to get the link to theirs? I hate those people; they bring nothing but selfishness to a conversation. I’ve certainly been known to drop a link to my own blog now and again, but only when it added to the conversation and NEVER as a first comment.

  • Unknown's avatar

IMO, although I could be wrong, it smells like another instant blogroll scam.
    (1) What happens to all those links?
    (2) Do they become the possessions of Mr. Linky?
    (3) And if so what does he/she do with them?
    (4) Who is Mr. Linky and why is he or she hiding his or her identity?
    (5) Why is the Mr. Linky site information only available to those who register and log-in? http://www.blenza.com/linkies/wizard.php
    (6) And if this scheme didn’t have something to do with someone making a buck from the accumulated links then why would Mr. Linky be offering an option of paying for an upgraded account?
I’m tempted to register, get the goods on this and then to blog about it.

  • Unknown's avatar

*chuckle* And we all know that TT needs more to blog about. ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

I think you may be reading into this a little too much.

Mister Linky provides a way for us to exchange lots of ideas and information in one small space. Mister Linky provides us with the code to insert the linky into our blogs. You register so that you can have a specialized meme. There are basic memes for free. If you want to do your own personalization, that’s when you pay to do things like changing your own widget selections, email notification and the ability to ban specific blogs.

Mister Linky is actually a stay at home mom and if I knew how to do it, I’d try to make a buck or two off it too!

I emailed ‘her’ and I’ll post her responses to all timethiefs questions!

Raincoaster- it does provide a way to link your blog, but it’s not all selfishness! It’s a network of tips and ideas, not really comments at all. Check it out at the blog Barbarah mentioned:

Thank you for emailing Ms. Linky. I will be interested to hear the replies to my questions.

I checked out both links above and wasn’t impressed at all. At this point I’m shaking my head and wondering what the attraction could possibly be. In fact I’m inclined to think that link spam = 1 post followed by 229 and 139 links respectively, none of which either clarify or substantiate the subject matter in the post.

And what’s this stuff about purchasing an upgrade so you don’t see the Mr. Linky text link ads?

    mm — Monday Memories
ccm — Click & Comment Monday
    ww — Wordless Wednesday
    tt — Thursday Thirteen
    ff — Friday’s Feast
sh — Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt

Why would a blogger use these memes and autolinks?
    * In short it’s a scheme designed to drive traffic to your blog.
    * You leave your link on multiple blogs in the hopes someone will click on it.
    * And the autolinkies others leave on your blog are Technorati friendly, meaning they count towards your blog ranking.
The Mr/Ms Linky plug-in is javascript and that’s why snpnmnmi is finding that it gets stripped out by wordpress.com software. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/javascript-can-i-use-that-on-my-blog/

  • Unknown's avatar

Timethief- really, it;s just a great way to swap ideas. Sure, some people use it to drive hits on their site, but I don’t see it as a scheme at all. It’s helpful. I’ve found great resources from it! 99.9% are stay at home moms trying to pool resources and ideas. I don’t see ANY malice resulting from it at all.

We want to use the linkys. I’ve emailed support. Is there anything else we can do?

By the way, here are Mister Linky’s responses:

    0. I don’t even know what an “instant blogroll scam” is. but there’s definitely no scam. linkies are just a convenient way for visitors to leave a link on a site.
    1. the links get stored, and then they get displayed the next time the linky widget is requested.
    2. all links are the property of the user that placed the widget on their site.
    3. mister linky just provides the service of collecting and displaying the links, and does nothing more with them.
    4. mister linky, like most people, values privacy.
    5. the url mentioned is for the widget wizard, and this page is only available to logged-in users because it generates code with their unique ID embedded in it. I don’t know what site information someone is looking for, but there is the blog with the faq, etc. and there is the help desk if someone has a specific question or issue.
    6. upgraded accounts are a way that users can get additional functionality of various kinds. they have to pay for it because it costs some money but mostly my time to develop and provide the service. a free service is available that is restricted in such a way that it does not cause a resource burden — mostly in terms of bandwidth.

    Best regards,
    Mister Linky

Disembedded is using Mister Linky right now on his blog, so maybe you can ask him how if you’re interested.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

It’s pretty straight-forward. First, an easy registration. Then, there is a code wizard on the website, whch is pretty clear. Use the WP.com, simple HTML option. Copy the code that it gives you. Go back to “edit” for your post, edit in Code setting. Paste the Linksy code at the bottom of your post and then republish it. You’re all done! You can view it here on a recent post:

Yes. I do endorse disembedded suggestion. In fact this morning when I read this thread, I visited disembedded blog to see linky and other widgets. I should tell disembedded a big “thanks”. He has such a wonderful list of buttons So is the case with Mister Linky. It got added perfectly well into my blog and You all are most welcome to check it out how it works visiting my blog. However, The only concern with it is that the button is disappearing suddenly but again becoming visible again. I do not know what weird thing is all in it.
