Beginner (newborn baby beginner almost) – download wordpress?
-
I’m having the worst time. Ultimately, I want to use mailchimp with a wordpress site. I want the site to be free.
1) I have a wordpress.com site set up, but I can do wordpress.org instead. Does it matter?
2) I saw a mailchimp for wordpress plugin that could be downloaded. When I went to download it, it prompted to save or to open. I clicked open, it just showed me a folder. I have no idea what to do. What should I do?
3) So I figured maybe I’m supposed to download wordpress? I had no idea if the download is for wordpress.com or wordpress.org or both. I also saw a list of requirements a person has to fulfill before they can download wordpress. I had no idea how to fulfill these.
I have no idea what to do! But I’m trying to do a fundraiser to help kids who have been sex trafficked, and I need to collect data. So I want to use wordpress and mailchimp. Help!!!!!! Can anybody walk me through this? What do I need to do? And what is my first step to be able to use mailchimp with wordpress?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, it does matter, depending on what you wish to do. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

What you downloaded is for WordPress.ORG software installs only. You cannot use the MailChimp embed code or the Aweber embed code and cannot create a pop-up on a wordpress.COM hosted blog. You can create a sign up page on MailChimp or on Aweber only and link to it.
If you want to use MailChimp with your WordPress.com site here’s the info from MailChimp Support http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-to-add-a-mailchimp-signup-form-to-your-wordpress-blog

You do not need to download a wordpress.ORG software install and run it on paid hosting or on your own server if you are okay with what wordpress.COM provides and accept the limitations http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

I recommend using the step by step tutorial linked to the bottom of your Admin page at https://learn.wordpress.com

So, to be clear, I created a wonderful blog site on wordpress.com. I then read about wonderful plug-ins that offer many new features, and on WordPress.com, plug-in features were not available unless I upgraded…So, I did. NOW, I find out I need to play the .org game. How and what is going on…. are there plug-ins for .com or only .org. And, if so, why wouldn’t that be noted in .com when I was upgrading?

I’m sorry your are confused about the two different types of WordPress software. Blogger installed plugin capability does not exist on WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/For that type of functionality you’d need a self-hosted WordPress.ORG software install running on a paid web hosting service.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins (passwords), features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
This guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform: Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
