Beginner question regarding Themes
-
Hello there,
I am new to this and I would like to create my own blog in which I will have several categories of articles.
I would like to use this theme http://organizationdemo.wordpress.com/
Even though I am new, I did some research and if I would want adverts, and fill the sides with links to other places and stuff these “premium” themes might be actually limited.
Is this theme i have linked you – what my site will look like exactly, except with my own articles and pictures?
Can’t I add a new menu button (category) or add adverts on the sides which are empty?
Does this imply adding extra columns which are not supported on this theme? How customizable are these “premium” themes?
And one last question: is it worth going for a business upgrade instead of just the premium account?

Welcome to WordPress.com! Please keep in mind that placing most types of ads on your site isn’t allowed when your site is hosted on WordPress.com. Take a look at our guidelines, which explains what your options are:

How customizable are these “premium” themes?
Most premium themes offer a variety of customization options. You can learn all about each theme on its showcase and support page. For example, Organization’s information pages are here:
https://wordpress.com/themes/organization
https://wordpress.com/themes/organization/support/Each theme’s documentation explains what can be customized.
is it worth going for a business upgrade instead of just the premium account?
It depends on your needs.
You can compare both upgrades here:
http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/ – includes everything in Premium, plus unlimited storage, unlimited premium themes, ecommerce plugins (see details for supported platforms), as well as live chat support on US business days, Monday to Friday, from 7am to 7pm, EST.Just let us know if you have any other questions.

Dear Kathrynwp,
Thank you for your kind support.
Regarding the Google Adsense I found that you can add the pluggin for Asense – on WordPress: https://wordpress.org/plugins/adsense-plugin/But you said it cannot be used. What am I missing here?
Many thanks

You are missing two things:
1) the difference between WordPress.ORG and WordPress.COM
2) the Terms of Service here which preclude blogger-initiated advertising.

As raincoster just mentioned, there are two different kinds of WordPress sites.
1. WordPress sites where you install the software on your own hosting plan are called self-hosted sites, and it’s only on that type of site where you can install plugins and add your own advertising.
2. You are currently in the WordPress.com forums. WordPress.com sites are hosted here on WordPress.com, and have some restrictions not found on self-hosted sites. For example, it’s not possible to upload your own plugins or run your own ads here.
You can learn more about the differences between self-hosted sites and WordPress.com here:

Thank you for your reply Raincoaster.
I am sure I am missing a lot more things since I am new at this.
However after reading a little bit things start to lighten up.
Wordpress.com is a hosting site just like Bluehost for example.
However, you have your own restrictions such as no google adsense for example.Using google.org or say Bluehost actually means that I am renting a server to keep up my website/blog.
Being a beginner, wouldn’t it be difficult to pay for a hosting site and do EVERYTHING by myself?
If I buy a premium theme, can I upload it easily then?
Do I need advance knowledge of webdesign languages? All in all, I would have to download wordpress from wordpress.org and upload it on my hosted server and add all the other things there?
Is this going to be extremly difficult for a beginner or it is somewhat intuitive and straightforward?
Many thanks again.

One more thing,
For example if I want to use this theme: http://organizationdemo.wordpress.com/
Can I use it on my own hosting service?
Or these themes even though they are not free, they can only be used on wordpress.com ?Thank you
-
Self-hosting definitely takes more effort than having a site on WordPress.com, but whether or not it’s the right fit for you is really a personal decision and only you can be the judge of that. :-)
If I buy a premium theme, can I upload it easily then?
For example if I want to use this theme: http://organizationdemo.wordpress.com/
Can I use it on my own hosting service? There are many premium themes available for self-hosted sites, but be sure to buy them from the theme developer, not the version here on WordPress.com. Themes purchased at WordPress.com will only work here on WordPress.com sites, not on self-hosted sites.
Organization is made by a company called Organic Themes. Their themes for self-hosted sites can be found here:
I see a theme that looks a lot like Organization, but it’s called Nonprofit on their site. You can ask them directly whether it’s the same theme under a different name
Do I need advance knowledge of webdesign languages?
It really depends how much customization you want to do, if any. A little bit of HTML and CSS knowledge is always handy. If you start getting into major customizations, some PHP and knowledge of WordPress theme structure is also helpful.

All themes sold through WordPress.COM are licensed and adapted to run on this multiuser software only. They are not for sale and use on WordPress.ORG software. You can contact the theme designer directly to get a copy that will run on WordPress.ORG software.
