Beginning a new blog on a new page and moving some older blog entries to the new page

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been using WordPress for a little over a year for my travel blogs for my friends. I cannot figure out how to get each separate trip on a separate page. The trip
I just finished (March through May) has been appended to one I took last fall (September-October), but I would like to keep each of them as separate blogs or at least separate pages in my main blog.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for your input.

  • Hi,

You can have your blog Posts appear on certain Pages with Categories. Add Categories for your blog posts, then create menus for each Category.

You can read about how to add Categories here:

    Organize Posts with Categories

And to create a Category Page and Menu, follow these instructions:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

    Hope this helps :)

    Catkinson,

Thank you for the info. It is a big help. i now understand Categories.

I was able to create several categories for my posts (to separate the posts into two different “Journeys”). All of those posts have been published.

I still can’t figure out how to change a post’s category from “Uncategorized” to one of the new categories. Must I make the category assignment only before a post is published?

    Thanks.

    Catkinson,

I believe I have been pursuing the wrong objective.

What I want to do is to put each separate trip on a new page. That is, all of the 2017 posts on one page, all of the 2018 posts on one page, etc. I want to keep all my trips on one blog – if possible.

The categories appear to be a simple means of grouping items for a search.

What am trying to do is keep each of my trips as a separate entity without starting a new account for each one. If, however, I must do that, then so be it. I am just trying to keep everything under one umbrella: “Journeys”

Any guidance will be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

You can definitely achieve this on your blog.

First, I would add Category tags (2017, 2018) to the blog Posts that you would like to organize (this can be done to old posts and new posts): https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/

Then add some new Category Pages. These will be separate Pages for 2017, 2018 etc. The Posts you have tagged will appear on these Pages (not just in a search). https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

There are more helpful video tutorials about adding content here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/video-tutorials/add-content-and-media/

    Hope this helps :)

    Catkinson,

Terrific! Works like a charm and separates each post into the correct year/trip.

    Thank you so much.

I do have one more question: Each post still shows up on the home page as well as being separated into a category – when the category at the top of the home page is clicked.

Is there a way to get a “clean” home page with just my welcome “hello message” and instructions to click the desired category (trip) at the top of the page?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

    Absolutely!

You can choose to have what’s called a Static Home Page. This will be a single page at the “front” of your site. You can choose what you would like to display there – for example – your “hello” message and instructions.

You can follow the instructions here to set it up: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Let me know if you need any further support :)

    Catkinson,

Thanks once again for your quick response and clear instructions.

I played with it for a while and I believe that I will leave the main page showing the latest post rather than making it look more like a dedicated web site.

For now, all I really want to do is give my friends and followers a journal of our travels.

We have another trip coming up around the first of the year and I will simply make a new category to keep all of those posts together as well as leaving them on my home page.

Best wishes for continued success in all your endeavors.

  • That’s great! I’m glad it all worked out for you :)
    All the best.
