I’m trying to transfer a domain from godaddy to wordpress. Everything says ‘free with your plan’ but when I try to finalize, wordpress asks for billing information to charge me $96/year.

    Hello @heartsoulmindyoga,

Do you currently have a Personal, Premium or Business plan and trying to use your free transfer credit? If so and you’re seeing a request to charge for a plan, then it may be possible you’re signed into a different account.

If you have not yet upgraded your plan, the $96/yr charge you’re seeing is for the features included in the Premium plan. A domain transfer is included for free with that particular plan.

Custom domains cannot be used on the free WordPress.com plans, but can be applied to any upgraded plan like the Personal plan or Business plan if that’s better suited for your needs.

You can read more about the different plans offered here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plan-features/

Once you’ve purchased an upgraded plan, you’ll be able to start the domain transfer.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you have further questions.

  • Hi there,

Even though we have a Free plan on WordPress.com, in order to use a custom domain (register, map, or transfer) you need to upgrade to one of the paid plans.

If you don’t want to get the Premium plan, you can get the Personal plan at half the price.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Thank you fstat & charleybea for your replies! I do have the free plan, so it looks like an upgrade is in order. :)

    Thanks so much!
