Bell Won’t Open
-
When I am on my site and click on the bell at top right corner to see who liked a post, it does not open. A box opens but it searches and never finds any data to show. This problem started on Monday. What changed? How can I change it back? Here is the URL for my site: https://sarahbowmansite.wordpress.com/.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

Thanks for your tips. For more details: I had just cleaned the browser’s cache and cookies a day or two before. That’s when the problem started. For years, it always worked. I am using Google Chrome Version 87.0.4280.66 (Official Build) (32-bit). That’s what works well with my Windows 7 computer and it says it’s up to date. I’ve been using this computer and this browser since about 2013 with updates as required. My tech company looks after it regularly. But if I ask them to look into this they’ll say that is WordPress’s job.
If I go into “My Sites” or “Reader,” I can see everything fine. But if I go into “visit site,” the bell won’t open the likes, etc. I can write from there. So that’s the backstory. I did not do anything yet, in response to your tips, because I don’t think they apply in light of this info. What do you think?

When I’m in the forums it won’t open, either. Okay, here’s what’s going on: The box opens right away, but the it can’t connect with the server. That thing just circles in the middle like it’s seeking the connection. Before I cleaned out the cache and cookies, it worked fine.

Hi,
Before I cleaned out the cache and cookies, it worked fine.
This makes me wonder if there is a lingering cookie issue. Would you be wiling to log out completely, then log back in?
-
Okay, I’m trying to but can you tell me where or how to log out? I guess I’m permanently logged in. I got logged out for the first time in ages when I cleaned out the cache and cookies. Normally, I just clean out for last four weeks but this time I did “for all time” and it only took five minutes. It was strange that it did not take longer. It never ever worked for me before to clean out for all time but maybe the anti-virus guys had cleaned it out recently. Anyway, I looked all over just now and I can’t figure out where to log out.

Thanks! I logged out, cleared the browser cache and cookies, restarted computer, logged in and tried again. Still doesn’t work. Maybe I’ll just have to access it from the places where it does work. I think I’ve got it figured out: It works when there’s a blue strip at the top but not when the strip is black. In other words, when I’m in “visit site” or “wp admin” it won’t open. Otherwise, it works. It used to work all the time so that’s a bit of a nuisance…but if there’s no remedy I guess there’s nothing for it, huh?

I’m not able to reproduce this problem with any of my test accounts or browsers at the moment but if you’re seeing the notifications loading spinner spin forever I think I may have come across this particular issue before.
The workaround I normally suggest is to click the logout button found below your profile on this page:
And then log in again on this page:
You do not need to clear any cookies or restart the computer.
A good test to rule out whether the browser or something else is the problem is to try a different browser like Firefox to compare behavior.

Hi there,
It works when there’s a blue strip at the top but not when the strip is black. In other words, when I’m in “visit site” or “wp admin” it won’t open.
Thanks for that detail. This means this is a known issue – we’ve had other reports of this, but mainly in Opera, not in Chrome.
But I’m afraid this means it’s related to changes Chrome is making in how it handles tracking cookies, like the cookies we use to detect whether or not you’re logged into your account when viewing individual sites.
At the moment there’s no easy way to get around the changes Chrome, and other browsers are making in this regard – essentially these browsers are intentionally breaking a key feature of the web for the sake of improving privacy, and that while the technology that would allow websites to still function in the same way without using tracking cookies is still being worked on (i.e. doesn’t yet exist).
So we might have to live with this “bug” for a while.

Thanks so much for all your work. Would it make sense to think that it kicked in right after I cleared out the cache and cookie because the old cookies were gone and new ones came in? Or is it just coincidence? Not that it matters, I suppose. I do appreciate your help and explanation. And I’m glad I found a way to live with it.
-
I think that’s just coincidence. It would rather have started after an automatic update in Chrome.
I do want to mention this issue does not (yet) exist in Firefox, so switching to that browser is also an option you can consider. Edge runs on the same foundation as Chrome and Opera, though, so I’d expect this to be broken in Edge as well.

Thanks so much for all your tips. In looking back over this thread I realize a lot of people contributed. My thanks to everyone.
