Benefits to transferring my domain

I think it is cheaper for me to register my domain through WordPress.com and pay their associated fees (versus going through another registrar and then paying for domain mapping).

However, I have a few questions:

    (1) I have already registered the domain elsewhere and am paying for domain mapping, so can I now transfer my domain over to WordPress? If yes, then how do I do that? (Do I have to wait until my domain is set to expire?).

    (2) What is the benefit of having my domain registered somewhere else? It appears to be cheaper to register it via WordPress, but is there a benefit to having it registered somewhere else, despite the higher cost?

    Thanks!

    1) No. WP.com does not accept incoming domain transfers. I would not wait for it to expire, either. You’ll lose it 90% of the time and then it’ll be much more expensive to get back, if you even can.

    2) none as far as I can see.
