Best image size in pixels for full width display

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

    WordPress twenty Twelve:

    1. What is the best image size (width) in pixels for full width post display (Not header)? I initially used 760 pixels (they seem to be displayed at 938 pixels), which is what I use on Facebook, but I saw on a forum to use 624 pixels.

    2. For full screen display, clicking on the image: I have doubled both 760 pixels (= 1520 pixels) and 624 pixels (=1248 pixels). Both seem to work.

    3. In both cases, should I use the same sharpening? Does the resizing/interpolation by WordPress affect the sharpening? My pictures are NikonScan scans. I use Photoshop Smart Scan, starting at Radius 0,3 px and Amount 150%, then I adjust until satisfied.

    Thank you for your advice.

    3. Yes, images lose some color and sharpness if the theme displays a scaled down version of the file you have uploaded.
    1. So if you want best quality on the post, you should upload images that aren’t wider than the post column. On Twenty Twelve this means maximum 625px (or 960px if you don’t use a sidebar). I don’t know where you found the 938 you mention.
    2. If you do this, there’s no point making the inserted images clickable. Are you aware that this is an option? Or do you actually want the images to link to a larger view?

justpi, thank you for your reply.

Ok, I will use 625 pixels for the pictures I don´t want to enlarge. I found the 938 pixels right-clicking and downloading an image uploaded at 760 pixels.

Yes, I want some images to be able to display at a larger view: images that are important in relation to the text information (the Sultan of Kanem), images that don´t show details on the smaller view (the Quran writing on a tablet), or images that I think are worth seeing at a bigger size (silhouetted women pounding millet against a golden background of straw huts). However I should also be consistent, so I am still in doubt. But now that I have the pixel information it should be easier to make a decision.

An additional question: if I want to reduce a picture, does it make a difference in quality to use 90%, 80% etc, or to click on the image and draw the corner in?

I did not know of the option of making images clickable. I am still new at WordPress, and I am sure there is still a lot of things I don´t know…

    Thanks again.

No. When the post displays a scaled down version, you lose quality – even if the displayed version is just one pixel smaller than than the original.

I did not know of the option of making images clickable.

For the available options see this post of mine:

Yes, I want some images to be able to display at a larger view

In that case you should either a) be content with reduced quality on the post or b) upload two versions of each image, insert the smaller one in the post and make it link to the larger one.

Thanks justpi. I think that´s all for now. I will try your suggestions. I am sure I will be back again on some other topic…
