Best method for running 2 blogs on same site

Hi all, I’ve been researching this and seen a variety of different threads about it (most of them years old) and just wanted to see, given my set of requirements, what you all though was the best method of implementing the type of setup I’m looking for. Basically, our site right now has one blog, but, I would like to branch it off into two blogs for two different content areas. We use WP to also manage all of the content pages on the site as well – I don’t think that matters but just thought I’d point that out. So, here’s what we need,

    – One URL, with one directory for the “main blog” (/main-blog) and another area for a topic specific blog (/topical-blog)
    – One admin url (/wp-admin)
    – Common set of users
    – ability to manage categories, tags, and posts separately for each blog
    – when users search, it searches across both blogs and content
    – ability to find the most popular posts in each blog separately
    – ability to see the latest articles per each blog

I know WordPress mu is an option, but is that overkill? I’m not looking to run a ton of blogs – but two – maybe max 3 on one domain. I’m open to suggestions and ideas – thanks!
