Hi:
I have been trying to build a new website with some of the new themes. I can’t seem to set an image in the new format some of the new themes offer. I’ve had this blog http://breezen.wordpress.com/ for years. I’m wondering instead of pulling my hair out, if I should simply update to the new twenty eleven theme and just add pages.
I hadn’t posted in a long time and my latest post has added some followers. My question: If I simply update my current blog to the new twenty eleven will it have some new bells and whistles? Could I add pages as well as child pages?
The only reason I started the new blog was to make it into a website. But I’m wondering now since I can’t make any headway AT ALL if I should simply update the old 2011, and have the features I want from there.
Thoughts?

I’m not sure what you are asking… if your WordPress.com blog is running the Twenty Eleven theme, which it appears to be, you shouldn’t have to update or upgrade anything.
I have used Twenty Eleven in the past (right when it came out), and I have never had any trouble adding pages or child pages. The Live Demo for the theme even demonstrates these features.
You can also set a custom header image in Twenty Eleven for your blog, which you have done. Twenty Eleven even has the feature of setting a different image for each page/post, which was one of the things I really liked about it.
Can you give some more details about the problems you are experiencing?
I also noticed you have the website http://www.animalisa.com linked with your blog. That is not a site hosted by WordPress.com, so if that is actually the website you are talking about, nothing you do with your blog or the Twenty Eleven theme will have an affect on that website.

Like ecumenicallife I’m puzzled why you are asking this. There are no new belles and whistles on either the WordPress.COM or WordPress>ORG versions of this theme. Of course you can have Pages and sub-Pages. And, you can create a custom menu.
Provided you are referring to the WordPress>COM blog here http://breezen.wordpress.com/ please read on.
Your theme description details are here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/
The live demo site is here http://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com/
I recommend that you see here http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/workings-of-duster/ for an article that describes all features of the Twenty Eleven theme in detail.static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
sticky posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts
featured images http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/To populate the sidebars Ephemera Widget you can make use of the Aside or Link post formats when you create a new entry (or convert an old one).
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/post-formats/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/As you know Twenty Twenty Eleven designed to provide a sidebar on single posts when displayed on their own pages. But do note also that widgets now have “visibility” settings so we can select which pages they display on. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility
re: custom menu
Please read this first Post vs. Page http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
(1) There is only one page we can post to in any blog.
(2) The static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ we bloggers create do not automatically update.Only the dynamic pages like Archives, Categories and Tags created by the software when we publish a post will update automatically update with new posts.
By default the front page of the blog is the Page that displays all posts in your blog. You can create a static front page and have your published posts display on another page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ but doing that does not change what follows.
Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
This guide will walk you through how to create category pages for your blog, to display groupings of similar posts on pages other than your front page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
Create a custom menu

Add dynamic categories and sub-categories pages to it

Create order and sub-menus (dropdowns)

There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well.

Oh you guys rock! I’m trying to incorporate my website here instead of building a new website. I was under the impression that my older version of 2011 would not support a child page. It would be useful to have my “services” under a parent, then add the two different services I now provide in two child pages.
I tried a new theme and for two days, could not set an image in the “insert image here” box. I tried a page, a post, everything and nothing worked.
You have provided me with a lot of info that will help to get my site to where I want it to be. I have “upgraded” to the new twenty eleven and see now I didn’t need to do that. But haven’t been on here in a year or so due to personal issues. Now I’m ready to get moving!
I had tried another name and theme. But with new followers, I thought it was kind of dumb to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. So will check out all this info and hopefully get what I want going.
I see now I can do columns too – an added bonus!
Thank you – I do know some css, and hopefully that and what you’ve given me will get me launched into an awesome blog. I would like my posts to remain on the first page ( I think) and plan to make use of the “more” tag so I’m not using up the whole page.
