Best Practices for Adding Images

I’m new to WordPress and have run into an issue that I’m not sure what to do about. My theme has a featured image size is 1200×600, which is different than Facebook and Twitter. So if you want to post onto social media platforms after posting a blog post, do you need to save different sizes of featured images or just allow some cropping to be done by those platforms? Is there a best size to add images to a blog post?
