Hi there.
I can’t purchase elsewhere as I do not have the know how for all the downloading and importing etc etc
You can’t do that in any case as it is not possible to use themes bought anywhere else on WordPress.com. We can only use the themes in the Theme Gallery: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
As for the SEO, your theme makes no difference to that as far as I’m aware. WordPress.com provides excellent SEO for all sites hosted here, so you can focus on creating content. So pick the theme with the appearance and functionality you like and focus on filling it with posts Google can index. You can read more about how SEO on WordPress.com works at these links: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/seo-and-your-blog/

So these aren’t worth buying as they can’t be used, is that what you are saying? http://themeforest.net/item/amax-responsive-multipurpose-wordpress-theme/11458572?ref=cirvitis
I do believe theme types can make a difference in addition to it’s content. -
No, you can’t use any theme from themeforest here.
The only place where I can think that theme can make a difference on WordPress.com is that some themes take a little longer to load than others, and loading time can to some degree influence search ranking. But all sites on WordPress.com have the same metadata, regardless of theme. The underlying structure of the site, the way search engines are pinged, that works the same across themes.
If you do want to use themeforest themes and want more direct control over SEO through, for example, plugins, the you’ll need to look into the self-hosted option through WordPress.org. You can learn more here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Just to add one more thing to add to kokkieh’s great advice, I’d suggest you choose a theme that meets Google’s latest mobile-friendliness check. You can find out more here:
