Best theme for grids plus latest posts on Homepage?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I would like a theme that will allow a grid layout, but also will allow me to create a static home page, which will feature my latest blog post and latest recipe (from two separate pages/categories). Any suggestions as to best theme to achieve this? Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m happy to help. First, I just want to make sure you’re aware of the live chat support that’s available as part of your premium plan. To use live chat, just go to https://wordpress.com/help/contact/ Let me know if you have any trouble doing that. It will be the fastest way to get help since the forums are asynchronous by nature.

Here are grid layout themes. You can use any of them with your premium plan:

Creating a static home page can happen on any theme. Here are the setup instructions to review: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

When using a static front page, your blog posts are assigned to publish on a different page though. So, if you want the latest posts to display on your front page, that’s actually the default blog setting and you don’t need to make any changes. They’ll just appear on the front page as you publish them.

Sometimes folks find it helpful to just create a few test posts when figuring out how they want to display things.

All of the posts will publish on to the assigned page – be it the static front page, a “blog” page or wherever you choose. That page does not have to be linked in the menu even. If you’d rather link categories in to your menu you can do that. Then, each post with the assigned category would appear when clicking on the menu item.

Another idea is that you can just embed a select few posts on to the front page.

There’s a lot of possibilities. I think the best thing to do is sort out which theme you want to use for the project and then work on the setup and configuration.

Hi Liz, thanks so much for your reply. I have just upgraded to Premium so didn’t think of the live chat. Thanks for that tip!
So I am happy to create a static page and i know that with the theme I’d like to use (Argent) that my last three portfolio items can appear on the Home page.
What I’d like to do is have a Blog page and a Recipe page, and then have the latest Blog and the latest Recipe on the static home page.
So I think what i could do is actually have one hidden page where I put all my blog posts and recipes, and then catagorise them as Blogs and Recipes and have those categories in my menu. Then I think I may be able to manually select the two posts I would like to have appear on mu Home page? Or maybe I can somehow set it to automatically have the latest in each category on the home page.
I want to set up my page unpublished until it is completed, and have my current page still running in the meantime. I guess that’s possible??
Thanks so much for your help!

You don’t need a “hidden” page for this. Just don’t assign a page as the posts page on your site. Under Homepage settings, select only the front page.

Then use the categories “blog” and “recipes” for those posts respectively, and add those categories to your site menu as explained here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

Then I think I may be able to manually select the two posts I would like to have appear on mu Home page? Or maybe I can somehow set it to automatically have the latest in each category on the home page.

You can do this automatically using the Display Posts shortcode. You can configure that shortcode to only show posts from a specific category, and to only show the one most recent post. You’ll need to use a separate shortcode for each category.

    Display Posts Shortcode

Note it can take up to an hour after publishing a new post before the shortcode updates.

Are you referring to two separate sites in your account? You can set the one you’re working on to private, then only you will be able to see it. Then set it to public once you’re ready.

If you mean you want to make changes on your existing site, any changes you make, i.e. publishing new posts/pages or edits to existing posts/pages will be live immediately. However, changes to homepage settings, menus, other customizations can be saved as a draft in the Customizer and only be made live on your site once you publish them. In the Customizer, click the gear icon next to the Publish button to save changes there as a draft instead.
