Best way to create a link that redirects to a Google Doc (or other page)
-
What’s the best way to share a link on my WordPress.com site
mysite.wordpress.com/paper1
that automatically redirects to a (potentially changeable) URL, e,g, a Google Doc, etc.
My motivation is that I will be referencing some papers that I will periodically update on Google Docs. The URL’s may change over time for one reason or another. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Does anything here help https://en.support.wordpress.com/google-docs/
If not type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. The support link relating to Google Docs doesn’t help. There’s nothing other than the basics of sharing docs and getting a URL to them. In particular, it does NOT describe how to do the indirection that I asked about above.
But, it’s a great idea to add the modlook tags area. Thanks for that suggestion.

I am sorry I did not have the answer for you and will follow this thread so I know what it is when Staff reply to you.

Hi azspector,
It sounds like you want to add a link to a Google Doc you have created, rather than embedding it. If you have the URL of the document you want to share, you can create a link using this guide:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
If that’s not what you mean’t, let me know and I’ll try to suggest something else.

Sorry, appreciate your answer but this is not what I am looking for.
Rather, I’d like to go to a page, say:
http://www.mysite.wordpress.com/paper1
and have that automatically “redirect” to a URL that represents a Google Doc. By having that indirection, I can give out a readable link (the aforementioned link to paper1), AND have the ability to change it to an updated version, or perhaps a different location, or whatever. This is analogous to a 301 redirect, but specifically customized to particular pages…
Any thoughts on how to do this. Non-hosted wordpress’ implementations seem to have plug-ins that support this functionality.

Hi,
I see what you mean now, thanks.
It’s not possible to redirect a single page of your WordPress.com site, but there are a couple of other options/work arounds:
1. Embed the Google Doc into that page. For example, you could great a Google Doc called ‘Paper 1’ and update the text within the document itself each time — which would mean you don’t have to embed a new document every time you want to update it. You mentioned not wanting to use embeds earlier, but this is a slightly different way they could be used.
2. Create menu links to Google Docs. It would be possible to do this by creating a custom menu and adding links to the documents.
