Best way to display pictures side-by-side with little or no space between them
-
Hi there,
Need some help with some pictures on my website (Peacemakerfoundation.com) (using the untitled theme). I want to display the pictures in twos (two columns) side-by-side with little or no space between them. I want the pictures to be as big as possible without any cropping.
Right now if they get any larger than about 285 pixels the one will be pushed below the other. Thumbnail gallery with two columns is OK, but need pics to be a little larger. Square tiles gallery is perfect in terms of size, but it crops many of the pictures.
Q1: How to show pictures at a large size, side-by-side, with little or no space (padding) between them (as in a tiled gallery) but just using a regular image posting format?
(Right now I’m using the free version of wordpress)
Q2: Is there a way of making a tiled gallery with consistent image sizes in two columns and with the entire picture shown (not cropped)?
Q3: If both ways (1 & 2 above) are possible, then which one is better for SEO?
Thank you
Luc

Thumbnail gallery with two columns is OK, but need pics to be a little larger.
Use the Thumbnail Grid Gallery with 2 columns, but select “Medium” size when inserting/editing. If you find that the images are still too large for 2 columns to display, you can reduce the size of “Medium” images in Dashboard>Settings>Media>Image Sizes. This will change that parameter for all the images inserted at “medium” size on your site, including those inserted individually.
I don’t believe that either method affects your SEO as long as you are including Alt text when inserting your images.

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply.
I have tried the thumbnail gallery in two columns with picture size at medium – it looks quite good but not nearly as good as the Square Tiles Gallery. Just really need a way to use the Square Tiles gallery without it cropping the pictures. Is there a way of doing this? You can see examples of the pictures I want to display in the various gallery formats here: Experimental Post with Various Gallery Formats

Anything with a portrait or landscape orientation will be cropped to fit the Square tiles Gallery thumbnail. The secret then is to use images that are square to begin with.

Hi there,
Just found another issue with the square tiles gallery: the pictures look a little fuzzy when viewing on an iPad. (Tried using another theme – twenty eleven – and same issue).
So the best would be to create a thumbnail gallery with two columns but with less space between the images, 2nd best would be to just post images individually side by side (in 2 columns) with less space between. Is there a way?If this is not possible in the free version of wordpress how about in the premium version?

The Premium Bundle will allow you to edit the CSS of your theme. You could use it to widen the theme’s content container to better accommodate your two side-by-side images, but in my opinion this is using a sledgehammer to crack an egg.
If you know that your theme’s content container is 700 pixels in total and that each image has a certain amount of padding/space around it, you could experiment to see what size image fits best for two in a row and then go from there.

OK thanks. Already experimented with the maximum sizes: can always take images up to about 275 pixels with captions and about 280+ without before it sends one image underneath. At the max sizes still about 1cm of space between the images (on my computer screen). Anyway will keep experimenting. Thanks again.
