Best way to get blog to send emails to small group of known subscribers?

What is the best way to get a blog to send email of latest post to a small group of known subscribers? I’ve tried various methods over the years, none of them ideal. My latest had the email go immediately to a forwarding address which in turn distributed the message to the subscribers. Previously I used Feedburner, but I didn’t like the way it ran at a fixed hour only once a day. Using WordPress subscribe was no good as the subscribers were mostly not interested in being WordPress accountholders.
