Best way to have an effective webpage on WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello peer boggers,

I had a .com domain with my personal name for about a decade. But when I was blockaded due to a war, WordPress sold the domain to one of their partners. Let it be.

But I am publishing a book on Amazon about the genocidal war.
And for that reason I purchased a domain with the book title. Because, if I opt to buy domains with my personal name, I will have to buy several ( at least .net, .info, .org) to compete with the one who pirated the .com.
It is okay. I believe my social media presence and fan base could compensate for that.

I got the following questions if you would spare a minute to advice me: (considering time, money, and efficiency)

1/ Should I transfer the domain with the book title to wordpress.com or simply connect it for now and deal with that issue at some other time to avoid delays?

2/ How does this affect the email option? For instance, Zoho works smoothly and for free with several webhosting agencies as well as cloudflare. Does wordpress do the same? I couldn’t get any info about emails on WordPress’ promotional pages.

    • 3/ Since my book site would only have a few webpages – just the book cover, reviews, and advertising pages, wouldn’t WordPress’ Personal Plan be enough for my case?

I know this is a lot of question for single post, but I hope you will take the trouble since I am a long time blogger (senior to some of you:) ) the challenges I got.

    Bless you.

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to help you with your questions. I’ll quote your questions so that they are easy to follow:

Should I transfer the domain with the book title to wordpress.com or simply connect it for now and deal with that issue at some other time to avoid delays?

It’s up to you. Transferring a domain can take up to five days. Also, when you point a domain to WordPress.com nameservers or IP addresses, that can take up to 72 hours to take effect. This is applicable in both domain connection and transfer. Perhaps you can take a look at this page to help you decide:

Connecting a Domain vs Domain Transfer
    2 min read
There are two ways to use a domain that you’ve purchased elsewhere with another registrar – Domain Connection and Domain Transferring. Summary Connecting a domain (also referred to as domain mapping) means that you connect your domain with your WordPress.com site, but you renew the domain at your registrar (where you bought the domain), and renew your site plan here at WordPress.com. Do

How does this affect the email option? For instance, Zoho works smoothly and for free with several webhosting agencies as well as cloudflare. Does wordpress do the same? I couldn’t get any info about emails on WordPress’ promotional pages.

We have our own email service that you can check out here. But if you have an existing email service with Zoho, you can keep using it. You’ll need to add their MX records to the domain. Depending on how your domain is configured, you will need to do it on our dashboard or on your domain registrar’s dashboard.

We can help you with this further once you confirm the route you’d like to take (connecting a domain vs. transferring it to us).

Since my book site would only have a few webpages – just the book cover, reviews, and advertising pages, wouldn’t WordPress’ Personal Plan be enough for my case?

Yes, the WordPress.com Personal plan seems like a good starting point. If you need more features, like uploading videos, you can always upgrade to a higher plan as needed.

You can get started with the WordPress.com Personal plan here:

Thanks for the helpful response. I took time to finish other aspects of my work, such as ISBN and copyrights registrations.

I will subscribe to the Personal Plan and transfer the domain in the coming days. I can afford to wait 5 days for a durable solution. :)

Would you clarify on two points?

    1/ Is the Personal plan’s annual $48/year or $60/year?
I see the first price on https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and the second price on my dashboard/upgrade page. Do I need to create a new WordPress account to purchase the Personal plan at $48/year price? (I also got a 20% discount coupon that I don’t wish to waste :)

2/I couldn’t find an informative page about email. It would be ideal to host both the site and email on platform rather than two, so I wish to use WordPress for email too. And all I need is just one email account and an email forwarding option. Is this included in the personal plan or purchased separately? If so, how much?

    Thanks.

  • Hi there, happy to clarify on those points:

Is the Personal plan’s annual $48/year or $60/year?

The plan itself is $48 per year, both purchase and renewal. This is in $USD however. On your account I noted that the price is in $AUD since this is the currency set on your account based on where we think you are in the world.

Did we get that wrong? If you would like to set your account to a different currency please let us know and we will be happy to switch it.

I couldn’t find an informative page about email. It would be ideal to host both the site and email on platform rather than two, so I wish to use WordPress for email too. I hope you don’t mind if I answer a question with a question, but you mentioned two platforms, is it the case that you have a domain with another registrar currently? If so this would give you quite a few options. I’ll touch on the briefly but we can discuss in more detail if you wish.

Regarding domains specifically, if you don’t have one, we provide one free with your plan for the first year (you do pay a separate renewal fee after that first year) and we do not currently have a free email option. The reason for this is most “free email” you get from other providers is quite basic and lacks important features like spam filtering and phishing/malware protection.

Instead we offer a Professional Email option that is on par with what you would find through Google Workspace, but at much lower cost. We do into detail here, and also we offer a 3 month free trial if you want to try it out:

If you don’t need a full email inbox but just need a basic email address to give out so folks can contact you, you can set up our forwarding option which is included free:

Add Email to Your Domain » Email Forwarding
    3 min read
Email Forwarding lets you use your custom domain in your email address, so your email address can be just as memorable as your site. All your mail will be forwarded to another email address you choose. For example: if your email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff), and you have the domain example.com in your site, you can set up (email visible only to moderators and staff) using Email Forwarding. Emails sent to jsmith@e

Most folks will use this option to forward a more professional looking address like (email visible only to moderators and staff) to something else like your Gmail account. This gives you a professional looking address you can share with others, put on business cards or marketing materials, etc.

You can’t reply from a forwarding address though. To use my previous example, if you were to reply to someone, it would be from your Gmail address, and there is no way to make it appear as if you are replying from (email visible only to moderators and staff)

Additionally you can use any other email service you wish. If your domain is with another provider already and they offer free email, you can use it here. If you prefer something more professional like Office 365 or Google Workspace, you can use those too. We would just need to add settings on our end to allow the site traffic to connect to the email service.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for clarifying on the price of the personal plan.

Regarding the email though, let me rephrase my questions:
I have had an experience of hosting a site in one place and using Zoho for email.
But now, with my new domain: Since I am gonna transfer my new domain to wordpress, I was get the email service also from here.

    Based on your answer:
-> If I transfer my domain to wordpress, I get a free email account for a year (which will be renewed for a fee). Right?
-> If I opt for the Professional Email option, I get 3 month free trial. Yes. I read that, couldn’t know how much I will be charged afterwards.
-> If I opt for the email forwarding option, it is free service along with my Personal plan. (This one seems a good place to start and upgrade later)

Correct me if I am wrong.

    I have a related question:
The domain was purchased on Feb. 28/2023 and sitting idle on Inmotion hosting, is there a possibility that transfer could take more than 5 days?
If so, can I start with Connecting domain for now? And would that affect the discussion about email we had above? If 5 days, even 7 days, is a secure timeline, this would be an unnecessary question.

    Thanks.

  • Hey there

Not quite. I think you may have read the part about getting a free domain for a year, if you do not already have one. If you already have a domain and transfer it here, we add one year to its renewal, and that is free.

But as my colleague mentioned, we do not have free email aside from forwarders, but we can offer a three-month trial of our Professional Email. More details here:

    Does that help?
