Best way to post lots of photos?

  Just wondering what the best way is to post lots of photos without using a link to an outside site like flickr, photobucket, etc. Is there a gallery function on wordpress? I already know about the slideshow, but I was told it’s best not to put more than 12 pics in there so the page loads quickly. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
