Best Way to Transfer Subscribers and Likes
-
It’s time for switching my subscribers (and their post likes) from my WP.com blog to my self-hosted blog. All prior posts and images have already been migrated, and some of the comments, but none of the subscribers (nor their likes).
I see that I can do this via Jetpack, but it says that subscribers will only be able to view the posts via the Reader, which doesn’t seem like such a great thing (the whole point of subscribing to get email posts is then ruined?). I want this to be painless for my subscribers – ie;, not make them have to sign up again, and not cause them to view things differently from what they’ve been used to over the years. As noted, I would also like the ‘likes’ to transfer over.
So, basically – 1.) how can subscribers (and likes) be migrated without changing their viewing behavior and 2.) when they do transfer, are they eliminated from the original .com site or will there be a record left over there?
PS: Regarding comments, some have also transferred (I’m really not sure how many), but for those with comments, the posts still say ‘no comments’, which is odd. Not sure what that’s about, do you know?
THANK YOU!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Likes cannot be transferred. Only subscribers to specific URL and stats for a specific URL can be transferred via the Jetpack plugin from http://jetpack.com
WordPress.ORG sites on paid hosting are not a part of the WordPress.COM blogging community, so the posts published on them do not appear on our WordPress.com categories and tags pages.

Thanks for the reply and the moderator tip, TimeThief.
I use Jetpack and had already seen the article you shared about moving subscribers to self-hosted – which is what prompted my question – because it states that subscribers will only be able to view posts through a Reader, which as I explained already, worries me if it changes how subscribers will view my posts. I’m wondering if there’s a better way that will maintain current behavior.
I’m not sure why you addressed categories and tags?
It’s also a huge disappointment that likes can’t be transferred! That’s a great loss – I’m surprised that hasn’t been addressed. :(

You’re welcome.
The reason I addressed non-appearance on the WordPress.com categories and tags pages above is because we have actually had bloggers posting here who expected to be able to leave wordpress.COM and still have their posts display on wordpress.COM tag pages. They seemed to think the two ie. wordpress.com and wordpress.org were inseparable and did not recognize that they are separate and different.
WordPress.COM sites are all part of the wordpress.COM blogging community and they all draw on the tremendous SEO that goes with being on this blogging platform.
Web Page URL: http://wordpress.com
The Page Rank is 9/10When you choose to have a stand alone self hosted wordpress.ORG install that SEO advantage is gone. I’ve been there and done that and saw the result of my choice. My self hosted site never regained the traffic flow nor the page rank it has when it was hosted here. But way back then I did not comprehend the whole picture. I do now and after years of active blogging I have canceled both of my domains and archived my sites.

Yes, they are separate, I am aware. I’ve had my WP.com blog for many years, (quite happily), but finally got around to incorporating my blog into my website (also WP based), which feels overall like a smarter experience (housing it all under one roof). Hopefully the SEO won’t kill it, but I’ve yet to drive any blog traffic to the new location… so time will tell, I guess.

It will take at least 6 weeks if not 8 weeks before the content is re-indexed by search engines, and it will not have the same search positioning, and the same page rank it did before.

Hi @saxtonstudio, did you have other questions for staff? It looked like @timthief had you covered here, but just in case:
1.) how can subscribers (and likes) be migrated without changing their viewing behavior and
Likes don’t transfer. But followers and their preferences do transfer. If they followed by email here, they’ll follow by email there. If they preferred to only follow via the reader here, we continue to respect that setting after the transfer.
2.) when they do transfer, are they eliminated from the original .com site or will there be a record left over there?
They are eliminated from the original site.

Thank you, supernovia. I had still been wondering about the whole “viewing via Reader” aspect, so your clarification was great to hear.
Regarding comments appearing but “number of comments” not appearing, maybe that will resolve itself once the subscribers are connected. If not, I’ll raise that question elsewhere.
Thanks much!

Comments aren’t tied to your subscribers, so I’m guessing that’s your theme. The folks at https://wordpress.org/support may be able to help, or you might find a similar question already answered there. Good luck!
